The cover is the best picture from the whole book! Stories are good and from all over Africa, mention their origins which is great. I can't give 5 stars however because the illustrations inside are weird, sometimes just plain ugly. I mean really ugly, enough that I'm writing this comment! I really thought it would be beautiful kid-friendly art like on the cover.

I have been reading these aloud at bedtime to my 8 year old twins and they both love them! Why? They are anything but predictable! I think they have come to expect happy endings or moral lessons, but these stories often have twists that surprise them. Not a lot of illustrations, but the ones they have are lovely and diverse. We have enjoyed looking at the map of Africa marked with flags of where the stories come from. Also have had the opportunity to talk about Nelsen Mandela and his story, which is new to them. Great all around book!

Love the different stories I read a different each night before bed to my son. Has cool pictures by different artists. It is cool to read about African folk tales. very educational! i would recommend this book to anyone definitely worth the price. May buy as a gift for others.

Stories are always a good thing. Diversity too. Hearing tales from other lands helps us to learn more about each other. I shared this set with my niece and two nephews ages 5 to 8 yrs old. They loved it too. Truthfully, the real reason why I made this purchase is because of Alan Rickman. He's one of my favorite actors/voices. I could find only one story read by him, but it was well worth it.

I was moved by the fund raising effort support for HIV AIDS orphans in South Africa, familiar and admiring of the story collection released some years ago, I was delighted to listen through the entire collection. The blend of music and voice, brilliantly realized by a host of talented talents "Artists for a New South Africa", brings these stories alive! Libraries (like mine) and individuals will appreciate each and every track in this 3 CD set that is up for Grammy nomination.

This is a delightful book. The different stories may be best suited for different ages due to the level of inference used. The stories are lively, engaging and many have morals or lessons to be learned.

I've been looking for a 📖 with South African tales in it. I live in America so I want my baby to know about her African heritage

The stories are interesting and varied, the production quality is outstanding, and some of the purchase funds go to a good cause. What more can you ask for?

I found Rethinking Everything a very thoughtful look at Tim Rymel's life and explanation of why he wrote this book. In many ways, it parallels my own journey out of organized religion as an African American, heterosexual woman who also began to question what I had been taught and what was my reality regarding the church, the scriptures, what/how we were supposed to act/feel versus what was my reality. Tim recounts his years of conversion therapy in his effort to "fit the mold". Fitting the mold is something we Christians have mastered, even to our detriment. I think this book will help anyone questioning what they have been taught, whether about their sexuality or how they interpret the Bible if it doesn't bring peace. It certainly was helpful for me to know someone else has experienced some of the same issues. Something Tim touched on and worth noting was how adults "in the faith" addressed questions from children who figured out that something was not adding up and how the children with questions were either ignored or shamed for asking those questions. I'm still questioning. The Bible says we are to work out our own salvation. Unfortunately, I don't think most Christians work out their own salvation. Instead they just fall in line with the status quo. This book may not be for everyone but I guess I could say that about the Bible too.Note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.

Rethinking Everything is the perfect title for this book. Tim unfolds and reveals the very long, hard process that many of us have taken in rethinking those things like god, religion and politics. His painstakingly referenced material is an excellent source of information. I can’t wait to read those referenced books and articles in their entirety. I’m now unafraid of living my life in uncertainty and am okay with it. Great book. I recommend it very highly.

As a therapist, specializing in spiritual abuse, I have highly recommended Tim's book to my clients who are on the journey of recovery. "Rethinking Everything" validates what most of us, who have lived the life of control and abuse, have experienced. It helps people understand that they are not alone in having to completely restructure their entire belief system of themselves, others and the world. Tim's vulnerability helps individuals feel validated in their pain and gives them hope that they can begin to make sense of their new lives.

Essential to any library. Primary assumptions need to be evaluated.....more than once. Bless this author

As someone who was once a strong Christian and ultimately left the Church, "Rethinking Everything" brought to mind the struggles I had reconciling my faith with my life experiences. Rymel shows how we as Christians are taught that we possess the one and only "truth," therefore, any information we encounter that bolsters those beliefs, we keep; and any information that conflicts with it, we summarily dismiss. Rymel writes, "I never went searching for answers because I thought I already had them." Any church-going Christian can relate to Rymel's experience of thinking there was no need to investigate or take a closer look at church dogma, because he already had the answers.Inevitably problems arise. We are confronted with the fact that real life doesn't comport with what were taught in church, i.e., "...if we obeyed God, we would be spared the more horrific circumstances of life. And, of course, he would never allow anything more than we could handle." God-fearing Christians are dealt blows that knock them to the ground as often as those who have other religious beliefs, or none at all. When you realize that terrible things happen to people who "love God and obey Him;" when you realize that God doesn't protect those who follow Him from the atrocities of the world, you're left wondering about the substance of your faith and what it provides. Rymel shares his own experiences of questioning his beliefs with authenticity and poignancy. I found this to be the most touching aspect of his book. But it is difficult for someone ensconced in a church community to disentangle himself--practically, pscyhologically, and emotionally. Rymel, knowing this to be true, adroitly explains "neurocognition": "...the connection between the physical brain and the environmental and biological input that shapes our thoughts, behavior, and beliefs." He tells us why people come to believe what they believe, how faith functions, and how difficult it is to walk away from an ingrained doctrine of belief when it is reinforced by family, friends, and community. He follows this by examining the conflicted thoughts of those questioning what they believe, including candid descriptions of his own personal struggles."Rethinking Everything" is impeccably researched. It is full of compelling information that is a balm to people like me who have left the Church, and a reason to dig deeper for answers for those wondering if what they believe is true.Rymel concludes by assuring his readers that a life of uncertainty isn't as scary as it seems. Not only does embracing uncertainty increase empathy and compassion, but it is ultimately a path to freedom.

Geekerella: A Fangirl Fairy Tale (Once Upon A Con), by Ashley Poston

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Elle Wittimer loves Starfield, the popular sci-fi series that has garnered a cultlike fandom across the United States. When the latest teen sensation, Darien Freeman, is cast in the significant role of Prince Carmindor, Elle vents her displeasure on her fan blog and receives unprecedented readership. While working on the promotions for the show, Darien begins to feel the wrath of Starfield's loyal fans and attempts to get out of an upcoming ExcelsiCon cosplay event by contacting the convention's organizer. Elle's deceased father is the convention's founder, and Darien's text message is forwarded to her cell phone. The two develop an anonymous relationship via text messaging, which starts to attract the suspicion of Elle's evil stepsisters and Darien's production team. When Elle decides to enter the cosplay contest, she must hatch a plan with her new friend, Sage, to avoid the interference of her nagging stepmother and acts of sabotage from her stepsisters. Predictably, Elle's and Darien's paths cross at the ExcelsiCon ball, which ends with the expected lost slipper. The plot in this fairy-tale retelling won't be a mystery, but there are a few twists and turns that add a unique spin to the classic story. Unfortunately, the alternating voices of Darien and Elle are almost indistinguishable. VERDICT This secondary purchase is best suited for collections that serve teens who revel in the fandom and cosplay communities.—Lynn Rashid, Marriotts Ridge High School, Marriottsville, MD

Actual Rating: 4.5 starsGeekerella is a modern-day Cinderella fairytale featuring Danielle, or Ella, who resides with her "stepmonster" and evil twin step-sisters. This book has everything from teen heart throbs, bloggers, CONS, witchy evil characters who are mean, and moments that touch the reader's heart. The great thing about this book is the total geekiness/fandom the story provides. First, it is a retelling of Cinderella. Ella does everything in the house, while trying to retain memories of her deceased parents. Ella tries to actively keep their memory alive, while the Stepmonster tries desperately to squash it out of Ella like some fly buzzing around a summer cake. Second, it has a mysterious budding friendship between Ella and THE Darien Freeman, who in this story, is kind of a big deal. Ella cannot stand that Mr. Heartthrob with insured abs is cast as the lead character in Starfield, Carmindor. She rants and raves about it on her blog...needless to say...Darien actually texts Ella thinking she is her father and the two have a budding friendship, with developing feelings. And the kicker... he has no clue she is THE Reblegunner blogger squashing his name in this role, and she has no clue he is Darien Freeman.Of course, there are twists, and turns, and Ella goes to the ball, and then is grounded until death. But the adventures are fun and it turns into being a cute story that leaves the reader with feelings of joy and delight. This story is an easy read, the whole book flew by pretty quickly. I like when books are just easy. Having said that, I wish there were a bit more challenges for Ella to overcome. Sure, glass slippers, and hopelessly devoted Carmindors are searching the States for Ella to confess their young love to, but I wish some of the interactions between "Stepmonster", Catherine, and Ella were more indicative of the crap relationship enslaving Ella. Sure, Catherine is a witch with a capital B, but Ella was a spitfire and sometimes talked back. So I wanted MORE to go down between the two of them. Also, the last chapter or two, just breezed by eight months later...and I wish that was also a bit more dramatic than what it is lead to believe. The book follows the POV of Darien and Ella, and sometimes it focused too much on the little things, so when the drama did happen, it fizzled pretty quickly and didn't pack quite the punch it could have. BUT. It was still a cute story, and I am still giving a decent rating. It was still entertaining, and one part in particular really had me teary. And when a book makes me cry, it gets a higher rating. We all need an ugly cry from time to time. Finally, I loved what the book means for nerd girls. Ella was this nerdy girl who really thought she was a nobody throughout the ENTIRE story. It took all of her challenges she did go through like befriending a moody coworker, helping create a cosplay costume, dealing with stepmonster and the evil twins, introducing others to the glory of Starfield, and making unconventional friends from the stars. In Darien's case, he sometimes came off whiney and I am not sure why it took him so long to take a stand. I felt that the drama between him and Brian could have been better written because it read weird. But I liked Darien. Closet geek. Those are the best. And remember, look to the stars. Aim. Ignite.

This one hit all my sweet spots: fairytale retelling, geek-centric, authentic voice, believably diverse cast, and sweet romance. I do adore a geek-centric story, when it comes from an honest fandom voice. My favorite is still (by far) The Geek's Guide to Unrequited Love, but this one is definitely in my top three. Here's why:♥ It's clever, but it sticks true to elements of Cinderella (especially the Ever After version), so while the major plot points were obviously going to happen, the hook and tension was in the details.♥ The text conversations/flirtations between Elle and Darien were sweet, funny, and believable.♥ Both main characters- heroine and hero- were developed. This isn't just Elle's show.♥ While the verbal abuse, manipulation, and controlling nightmare of Elle's house is present, it isn't the primary focus. It doesn't serve to develop her as a character more than her love for her deceased father, which feels authentic both to reality and to the original character of Cinderella (who has to have been clinging to something hopeful).♥ There's representation of the fandom community, both the good (community help) and the bad ("you aren't geek enough because you're a girl" b.s.)♥ Everyone not a villain has to take risks in this story in order to experience wonderful things. I think that's as important of a message for side characters as it is for main characters. In short, it's a sweet, believable romance. If you go to cons or write fanfic or are a fan of Firefly, Star Trek, BSG, etc., you'll enjoy it that much more. I recommend it for fans of contemporary YA romance, fairytale retellings, and the fandom community (especially those of us who grew up on scifi, thanks to our fathers).

This was a really cute read! I enjoyed the way the story was written with both main characters' point of view and the setting of it all. In this, we have ExcelsiCon (which makes it an even more fun approach for a Cinderella retelling) as well as Darien and Elle brought together through their love of Starfield."And if you want to be one of the lucky few to meet the Federation Prince himself, Midlight Entertainment is teaming up with ExcelsiCon this year to host a fan competition! Dress up as your favorite Starfield character and you could win once-in-a-lifetime tickets to ExcelsiCon's masquerade ball, where the winners will be treated to an exclusive meet-and-greet with our man Darien Freeman, plus tickets to the premiere of Starfield in L.A.!"I wasn't sure how this retelling would go, as many only have slight variations to them, but there was such a fun twist to this one it was hard not to like. The food truck that represented the pumpkin carriage was a great way to incorporate it in with all the other changes like the prince being an actor with a great personality and love for all things Starfield and Elle with a great heart who dreams big and loves all things spacey as well.Even though there were some parts too far-fetched like a perfect "prince charming" who's only real fault was his father/manager, or a stepmother who didn't really add much depth or change to things, it was everything else that kept me reading. I couldn't get enough of the Doctor Who references or how much I enjoyed the talk about ExcelsiCon as well as Elle and Sage working on the costume(s) for the Cosplay/ExcelsiCon Ball. The romance may have been a little much in the way it was played out (not safe at all in the real world) but it gave it that fairy-tale aspect that we daydream about. Not to leave out the feels it gives with ExcelsiCon added to the mix."A Torturian beside me mimics my salute. And a Nox. A Jedi. A Vulcan. A Dark Elf. The entire Fellowship of the Ring. Everyone, in their different-colored hair and costumes and masks, lifts their hands in promise-swears to show that underneath the robes and breastplates and Spandex are people whose hearts beat together. We might all be different--we may ship different things or be in different fandoms--but if I learned anything from twenty-three days in a too-blue uniform playing a character I thought I could never be, it's that when we become those characters, pieces of ourselves light up like glow stick in the night. They shine. We shine. Together."Geekerella, as the title references, has all the geeky feels and the lovey dovey ones that I was hoping for. It is a very unique take on the original fairytale and happy to see a few changes with characters that usually stay the same in every retelling. There were some things, as mentioned above, that I didn't love as much but they were minor compared to how much fun the reading was throughout this novel. I'm very glad I took the time to pick up this book and enjoy all the fandomness involved.
