I read a lot of travel books and plan pretty much all of our family trips on my own, with only a few exceptions. My family of 5 has been on 6 continents and 30 countries; we need to cross off Antartica. I've recently wanted to see more of our own country, as we have seen a lot, but there's still so much left. I've used Frommer's, Fodor's, Lonely Planet, Google, Tripadvisor, anything I can to help me research a place. The title of this book is great and I was SO excited to get it and start planning. On the front cover at the bottom of the title, it says "where to go, when to go, what to see, what to do." I was highly disappointed. The book has a nice sturdy, "hard" cover, although it's paperback; the pages have decent pictures and the quality of the pages are nice. But aside from that, it significantly lacks in detail. I'm not asking for in depth history of each state (Insight Guides are good for that), but there is absolutely NOTHING on when to go. Maybe someone doesn't know one of the best times to see Vermont is the fall foliage or Disney World is painfully humid and hot in July/august. Or you don't really want to see the Grand Canyon in Dec/Jan as many of the trails/roads are closed. The "where to go, what to see and what to do" parts are a rambling mess and it's basically just listing off, not really a good description of why one would want to go or whether it's worth your time. What the book is good for is to tell you what is there, in that state, but a google search or Tripadvisor on "what to see and do in ____" would be more worthwhile. But then again, it's very basic info that could possibly fit into 3/4 inch book (and not even full size 8x11) on 50 States, with 5000 ideas. Will be returning my copy :(

A fun informative book chock full of information on all 50 states (and the Canadian provinces). There are lots of ideas of things to do -- and even book, music and movie ideas to enjoy before or during the trip.

Can’t believe national geographic put their name on this book. It is by far totally not worth a dollar you may find 10 ideas of things to do. It is nothing but a book naming 50 states. Somewhere they missed the title 5000 ideas. Not worth the paper it is printed on. It worked out for me Amazon took it back.

I saw this book at the library and needed to have my own copy. So much great information. What I also like is that for each state, it gives you some movies/music/books relating to that state. We travel via camper to many of these states and while some of the information may be repeated from previous books, there is a lot of new stuff in here too. A great resource to have.

I bought this for my husband thinking it would be a fun book to take on road trips but I feel like it was difficult to actually use on a casual trip. The pages are crammed with text but nothing looks unique or appealing. It's not a book that inspired me to stop at any of the travel spots and it didn't feel well researched for all the info it contains since it barely touches on anything truly unique or interesting. I will be relying on Google instead - don't bother paying for a book like this with all the free info out there.

Great book, with some wonderful pictures, and great ideas for new retirees!!

This is a fantastic book for any US travelers. It has given me some great ideas about places to go in some states that are not necessarily known for anything. Great colorful pictures.

I travel a lot so a lot of these listings I knew about. But...if you haven't done much traveling, or if you have always seemed to have a tough time figuring out where to go...this is actually a good choice for you to get.

I don't know if, as one reviewer mentioned, this book gives lie to anything that I knew about gays in Jamaica. In many ways it affirms much of what you'd expect from middle class gays that probably created the kinds of spaces that Powell sparingly describes in the novel. I have the 1994 edition and it is only 137 pages long so it's a quick read. Set in the late 70s it gives a compelling portrayal of some of the trials and opportunities that gay men faced in what was still then a very homophobic and 'trying' society. The threat of HIV/AIDS is present but obviously nameless.I enjoyed it. There's much to be learnt as far as the continuity between then and now and the ways gays remain apprehensive about their everyday existence in Jamaica even as some settle down in relationships that might not be as domestic as the ones described in this novel. That may be my biggest problem with this novel - much of it is centered on the home - home-making and home-breaking. This might reflect the struggles of the time...I don't know...but at times it felt like the action was far too circumscribed by family life, a hetero-normative search for stability and a lingering debt to uncaring or else indifferent parents. The one piece of home-making I didn't mind is the illustration of the kinds of networks - for all kinds of support - that gay men were forming at the time and which perhaps transcends the idea of a family even as it incorporates some elements of that model.Though some moments are hilarious, this is not a funny novel hence the title of this review. It's not, however, depressing.Those who do not read or understand patois need not worry. Though Powell gives a nod to creole grammar, any English speaking person can get into it fairly easily and will lag a little less after about the first 20 pages.If for no other reason, you should buy this book because it is the only one I know of that makes a novel-length attempt at situating homosexuality with Jamaican (maybe Caribbean) social life. Both the social scientific and literary canons of the English speaking Caribbean have and continue to silence queer voices. Powell's contribution at least resists that orthodoxy and really gives you a window into a whole other side of Jamaican life.

"A Small Gathering of Bones" offers one of the most genuine renderings of Gay life in the Caribbean in print. It shows with refreshing accuracy the spaces Gay men have created within Jamaican society as well as their challenges. Powell's writing creates surprising and intimate textures of male life. Perhaps one of the best books you will find about exposure therapy for OCD. Both authors are very prestigious and well regarded in the academic community. The exercises provided on the book can be helpful for immediate relief of symptoms. Exercises are very behavioral and somehow technical. Recommendations are made at a cognitive level as well. I personally feel that this book is best for therapists who want to provide this kind of treatment, however it can be very challenging for people suffering of intrusive and recurrent obsessions and compulsions. I believe nonetheless that it could be a good support for a patient already engaged in treatment.

Great quality for second hand book. Was excited to start it but it didn’t grab me. Experienced post partum OCD symptoms. Meditation and yoga has worked the best. The books help understand what is going on and could be very beneficial for someone not already in the psychology field.**please help and designate if this was helpful!

Buy this book! I also recommend reading this book and then read Life without Ed because it helps to name the obsession and separate it. Both are must reads. Stop Obsessing is a book you can go back to again and again.

Some good ideas for the obsessive compulsive person.

This book helped me to understand my OCD, it gave me the tools to initiate my recovery which I still use today and I am thankful to the authors for contributing towards understanding and dealing with anxiety
