For reasons which pass understanding, I had never read this book before now. This, in spite of having been a huge fan of the film (the 1963 version, not the awful 90s remake) since I was eleven years old. How is that even possible? I guess it just felt as if I had, since I was so familiar with the movie. And yes, I know it's not the same thing, but it's a hella fine film and, as I discovered as I finally read the book, it is surprisingly true to the original text.Yes, of course there are differences, but predictable ones like cutting for length. After all, films are able to tell us more in less time than a book can. The characters are fairly consistent with the novel save for the doctor's wife who is, if anything, worse than her film version. The relationships are not precisely the same, but the spirit of those relationships and what they mean to the characters are true to those in the book. What was different for me was that the book made me more uneasy about Eleanor, and about how much of the book's horror is in her mind, or can be attributed to her poltergeist. If you've read Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, you'll be familiar with the disorientation of not ever really knowing what's going on, whether it's supernatural, a mental aberration, or a combination of the two. And that, more than anything makes The Haunting of Hill House one of the most unsettling things I've ever read. It's gloriously well written; it gave me the wiggins in the first ten pages, and never really let up. But it's not throat-clutching horror, or jump-out-of-your-skin horror. Rather, it's a slow and even sad progress of the death of hope in the face of something overwhelming. The horror is that no matter the source, nothing can stop it. I'm not a fan of gorpy horror, buckets of blood and body parts being flung about. Monsters don't scare me. People scare me. What goes on in people's heads scares the bejeebers out of me, so this sort of horror? It's my candy. And for my money, Shirley Jackson is one of the greatest horror writers ever.

This is one of Shirley Jackson's most well known works mainly because it was made into a movie. Actually the 1960s version is more accurate to the book than the latest film version. But on to the story.Hill House is a huge pile of bricks and mortar that was built in the late 1800s. There is much tragedy attached to the house starting with a carriage accident that occurs as a young wife comes to her new house only to be killed when the horses are startled and the carriage upturns. The young daughter of this marriage is brought up in this curious place and ultimately dies here. Her caregiver commits suicide by hanging herself from a circular staircase. There are many rooms, hallways, and lots of tales about ghostly apparitions, noises, and so forth.A professor, Dr. Montague and his team decide to investigate the reports of paranormal activity in this house. In addition to his team, his invitees include two women---Theodora a free spirited theatrical type and Eleanor, a mousy insecure woman. The other invitee is Luke, a distant relation of the owner of the house. The other people in the story consist of a housekeeper/cook and the caretaker---kind of spooky people in their own right! As everyone arrives and settles in and becomes acquainted it soon becomes apparent that there is definitely a presence at Hill House and it's not a friendly one. There are "cold spots" in the library, and during the night banging on Eleanor's bedroom door. Theodora moves in with Eleanor, but the noise doesn't stop. Then there is a message on the wall "Help Eleanor Come Home" Is this a trick played by one of the guests? Or is there a force in the house that is compelling Eleanor to be a part of it? The other guests are sympathetic to Eleanor, but she becomes more and more delusional and hysterical which culminates in her being asked to leave. There is mystery, drama, and suspense around every corner. Shirley Jackson shows a lot of creativity and imagination in her writing of this book. Her descriptions of the house and grounds are so realistic that you almost picture yourself in the midst of the scenery. She brings out the cruelty of humanity in her descriptions of the characters, especially Luke and Theodora who play on the fears and weaknesses of Eleanor. And in the end, maybe the lesson to be learned is this: there are inherently evil aspects of nature that should just be left alone and Hill House is one of them!

It's been a long time since a book genuinely scared me, and in my search to find one that can, this title seems to keep popping up, so I decided to give it a try. Hailed by many horror authors as the scariest book of all time, it perhaps has wound up with a reputation it can't possibly live up to, and at least on that front, for me, it doesn't. There are some genuinely tense moments, but they are few and far between, and really only approach being scary. We follow a group of 4 people who have visited Hill House to investigate it's purportedly haunted nature, and they are all well-drawn and interesting characters, and their interactions do have something to say about some of the inherent flaws in human nature. A sense of dread permeates throughout the book, as it is always clear that something horrible could happen at any moment, much the same feeling as one gets while watching Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" for the first time. The house itself is very well realized and very intentionally feels like a 5th character. Perhaps the scariest thing about it is the ending, which I will not spoil, but which will certainly not leave one feeling chipper. Even then though, it is more creepy than scary, a distinction which certainly does matter. While I would say this book is deserving of its position in the pantheon of classic literature, and I highly recommend it, I would not say it is satisfied my search for a truly frightening read.

#395,231 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book is interesting, surprisingly so given that the characters are only moderately likeable and the plot moves between the careful investigation of the current 1970s crime and the somewhat stilted diaries of the victim's father. Some readers may lose patience with the technical details of possible railway construction in Iceland between the two world wars or with description of historical artifacts in the house (The House of Evidence)--both highly relevant to the plot, it turns out. I found investigation of the forensic evidence interesting but did find myself reading quickly over some other details, such as the diarist's description of hikes and drives through unfamiliar areas. In general, I found the gradual unfolding of the motivation behind the killing held my interest through the slower parts of the book. Viktor Arnar Ingolfsson is a civil engineer and used his background well in creating a credible scenario and the ultimate solution to the mystery. And I appreciated learning about Iceland and the interaction of Iceland and its citizens with other European countries as WWI and WWII were brewing.

This novel is the story of the deaths of a father and son, in 1945 and 1973, respectively, by the same gun. This is not your typical Nordic mystery, with a tormented protagonist seeking to solve a murder while drinking away his own problems. It is in part a police procedural, circa 1970s, full of details of how police investigate a crime, the latter of the two deaths. The detectives involved are the motley collection that you would find in a real department. The original death is depicted through diary entries from the dead father inserted at the end of each chapter. At first, this mechanism put me off. But once I got accustomed to them, they became the most important and interesting part of the novel, because they gave insights not only into his character, but also into the character of Iceland during his life. That period covered the early 20th century, a time of great upheaval in the world, and the father witnesses these events as a student and trainee in Denmark and Germany, then in Iceland, as even that isolated nation goes through a period of flirtation with communism and fascism. As the novel progressed, I wanted to see even more of this history, because the procedural became boring and the "mystery" became obvious. The ultimate revealing of the mode of the deaths was anticlimactic. The book was interesting for someone like me planning to visit Iceland in the near future, but less so as a mystery.

I felt a deep and forbidding unsettling in my soul before completing the last chapter. One who has not lost, to some violent act of tragedy and death, an exceedingly strong father figure, especially at the age of Jacob Junior would never be able to absorb the immense disruption which follows. Undeniable and unforeseeable changes in psyche, one's self worth, loss of social standing, view of the world and one's subsequent place in it. I am amazed at how dead on the author closed this novel with complete translation of the lives and deaths of all who expired. I was 23years old when I witnessed the violent assassination of my 59 year-old father attempting to save me horrible abuse that began at age 15 at the high school sweetheart I married. I am Jacob Junior. I did not recover in any way and am now hated by my 39 year old son because of my PTSD and clinical depression. My physician said my recent mini-stroke are a result of early age multiple head injuries. I applaud this auteur's gift in the magnificence of his storytelling. He was exceptionally accurate in how he closed the lives of all who weren't allowed to live to the end. 😢

Disclaimer: I purchased this ebook for free during a sale.Ingolffson's "House of Evidence" consists of 399 absolutely packed pages - he has a true gift for giving a very full picture of a scene and using many different kinds of sensory input to place the reader within the pages of the book. It is clear that he has envisioned everything down to the very last detail, and he makes sure to convey all of these details to the reader - at times, it can actually be rather draining, a few smaller details here and there would not have been missed. His style is technical and clear overall, though as a result, some of his more tender moments could have been more poignant. However, technically speaking, this may or may not be due to his own work or the abilities of the translators. While I know nothing of the novel's mother language, I can say for certain that the translation is not only entirely comprehensible, it shows mastery of English, as opposed to utilization of a limited vocabulary, as some translated works tend to do.The main cast in "House of Evidence" consists of the investigative team and those directly connected with strange twin murder cases, separated by decades. The characters were distinctly hit-or-miss: Some were very accessible and well developed, while others fell rather flat. However, character development picked up greatly in the second half, so while the novel starts somewhat slowly, readers are greatly rewarded for their patience. Indeed, one of the most compelling characters in the book is the elder Jacob Kieler, who is revealed only through his diary entries, of which there are several at the end of each chapter. While they tell a compelling tale, they are somewhat numerous, and could potentially have been reduced in number and length. Again, a bit too much extraneous detail. As to the plot, it follows a fairly standard whodunnit format, though it is enhanced by the revolving point of view between the detectives and police force. It is plodding, however, and due to the occasional flat character, I sometimes just needed a break from reading. Again, the end is worth the wait - it does get quite dark, but the secrets revealed are beyond anything that could have been guessed at.One key thing to note that irked me however, was the awkward treatment of a transgendered individual - the narrative force assigning pronouns stuck to one, while the character openly acknowledged the other. This disparity was slightly grating, though the fact that it existed at all was a progressive note for a novel written in 1998 and set in the early 70s. Also included was a rather derogatory comment regarding a homosexual, but again, given the setting of the novel, it is accurate to the time and place, if an unfortunate reminder.Bottom line: Slow moving, but, much like a train, once it picks up speed, nothing can stop it. A worthy read. Appropriate for: Mystery fans, adult demographic.Trigger warnings: (***SOME SPOILERS AHEAD***)Recollections of torture, mutilationContact me at: SeanOnAmazon@gmail.com

This is an important scholarly book presenting in fine detail the stunning array of fabrics and their remarkable needlework assembled at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2016-2017. I visited the exhibition twice when on holiday in London. Because I knew that this exhibition catalogue would not fit in my suitcase, I took a photo of its publication details to order the book when I returned home. Although it is not my field, several aspects are of great interest to me. I've learned a great deal, and intend to refer to the articles and beautiful photographs frequently.

Worth the price. Many excellent photos. A must have reference for Opus Anglicanum.

Very in-depth. Beautiful plates.

After reading the first few chapters (The chapters are very short) of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" I wondered how anyone could be interested in such pompous, egotistical, aloof and self serving characters? After reading on I said, "Wow! How could I be so interested in such characters?"Getting toward the middle of the book, I was hoping that it would never end.By the end of the book, I fully realized what a magnificent piece of writing I had just read."Pride and Prejudice" is one of the best sociological studies about early nineteen century British loyalty and society I have ever read - where title, rank, fortune, and good looks are in many ways the requirements of an approved marriage, much, much more than love. In fact, this wonderful book might not be as relevant today as two hundred years ago, but there are still many traces of such societies throughout the world, today. It was not all that long ago in America, where marrying outside of your religion, or ethnicity, was looked down upon. The book is full of wonderful characters, but Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennet is, in my opinion, the star. Her character is so wonderfully and fully realized that at times I felt her jumping off the page and directly into my life.Liza, a fellow member and friend on Goodreads, informed me that she had read the book twice and still was not sure if the ending was 'sad' or 'funny.' To me, it was funny and exceptionally rewarding but sad to think that a lady's livelihood depended more on the wealth and rank of your partner than love.Quite an amazing book.

There must be many thousands of digital versions of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I got this because I wanted to compare it with another that I had, and didn't realize until it was on my kindle that the name of the author on the cover page is incorrect!! The author is NOT Charlotte Bronte!!!!! This is so inexplicable and appalling a mistake, I had to write and mention it so that it can (hopefully) be corrected. The rest of the text is fine. I don't want it on my kindle, and have deleted it. How anyone could have confused Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte (author of Jane Eyre) is beyond me.

This book is just gorgeous! I already own a few copies of Pride and Prejudice so I didn't need another but this was too cute to pass up. It's a generous size, the colors are bold and bright and the illustrations are whimsical and fun. A great gift for any jane Austen fan, even if she already owns a few copies ;)

"Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen started off annoying me and ended up enchanting me. Up until about page one hundred I found this book vexing, frivolous and down right tedious. I now count myself as a convert to the Austen cult.I must confess I have been known to express an antipathy for anything written or set before 1900. I just cannot get down with corsets, outdoor plumbing and buggy rides. Whenever someone dips a quill into an inkwell my eyes glaze over. This is a shortcoming I readily own up to but have no desire to correct. So I admit to not starting this book with the highest of hopes. I did really enjoy Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" however and so when my friend threw the gauntlet down I dutifully picked it up.Boy did I hate him at first. To get anywhere with this book one has to immerse oneself in the realities of life and marriage in the nineteenth century. At first all this talk of entailment and manners just left me cold. I liked the language to be sure. Austen's dialogue is delightful through out but dialogue alone (no matter how delicious) does not a great novel make.A hundred pages or so in though I started to see what a shrewd eye for character this Austen woman had. Mr. Collins was the first person I marvelled at. His character springs forth fully formed as a total but somehow loveable ass. From that point on I found much to love about this book. I was so into it by the end that I was laughing at some characters, sympathizing with others and clucking my tongue at an unhappy few. In short I was completely absorbed. In conclusion I must now count myself a fan of Miss Austen's novels (and not just their fim adaptations) and do so look forward to acqauinting myself with more of her work in the future. "Emma" anyone?

The print edition of this book is awful. It's an awkward size so line lengths are too long to read comfortably. It is evident that basically no work was put into laying out the text of the book: line spacing is too close, there's no page breaks before chapters, chapter headings are the same typeface as the surrounding text. Typography is general is very poor: quotation marks that should be “curly” are instead "straight", for example. This book looks like someone just copy-pasted the raw text of the book, slapped a cover on it and called it a day. Zero effort went into making this. Do not buy this.

The size of this book is way too big like a magazine. I am not sure why you decided to print a book like this. The feeling of this book is like it was printed from a PDF file. I think the purpose of these kind book is to be read, carried and stored easily. Magazine can be printed bigger because it needs space to arrange the pictures. And why I buy a paper book and not going with digital? Because I want the feeling of reading books! Especially these kind of classic books!Very right hand one is the one I got from B&N bookstore. Much better feeling to read. And it's cheaper.

I decided to re-read this book in light of the disgust I feeling towards our present political system! I watched the debates, all 3 of them, and at this point, I believe that we have reverted right back to 1775 when it comes right down to it! We no longer are subject to the whims of a King, but, we are certainly being ruled by the Aristocracy in this country. We need to be reminded that when we fought for our independence, we claimed that GOD would be our only king! Not money, not the rich, not the powerful, not the bullies, not the evil ones! We need to sit and reflect on the reasons we fought to be free!

Many of us have historical and political perspectives that an overwhelming majority of the colonists were in favor of breaking the tie with Great Britain. Common Sense shows us that this was not true. Thomas Paine's arguments to break from the King of England were based on common sense. These were presented in a pamphlet that was read by a majority of the adult colonists. His logical reasoning was considered the gold standard of reasons for breaking from Great Britain when we did. A must reading if only to understand history from an author of the day instead of from our ivory towers of today.

This free version of this important document from American history contains only a few typographical errors. The pages are well formatted.Of course, the content is exceptional. It details the argument for independence from Britain, while giving insight into the historical context.I first read this over fifty years ago. My appreciation for it has grown now that I am older than its author at the time. We stand on the shoulders of giants.

Common Sense is one of the greatest articles of argumentation ever written. Paine was the finest pamphleteer of his age and was able to turn the discontents of the colonists and, especially, the intellectual leaders of the revolutionary movement into arguments that were easily understood by ordinary colonials and which inspired them to rally to the cause of independence.I first read Common Sense more than fifty years ago and remember well being impressed with Paine's ability to carry arguments and to anticipate those of his opponents before his tract even hit the street. Over the course of my lifetime, I was inspired by the author and became a pamphleteer of sorts myself. I always told my colleagues that I wanted to become a poor man's Tom Paine. But after reading the piece once again, I realize that almost all who aspire to follow in his footsteps, if not fill his shoes, are doomed to become but very poor copies of the original.Other reviewers have noted the fluidity of his writing; it reads as simply, directly and forcefully today as it must have nearly a quarter of a millennium ago. Obviously, one did not have to be a great reader to be swayed by the force of Paine's words or to be inspired to the side of those wishing to throw off the English yoke.I was struck by echoes of Paine in many great American speeches that were running through my mind as I read. A number of quotes from Robert F. Kennedy seemed to have been directly inspired by Common Sense, and I hastily looked them up and offer these two for your consideration:"It is not enough to understand, or to see clearly. The future will be shaped in the arena of human activity, by those willing to commit their minds and their bodies to the task.""All of us might wish at times that we lived in a more tranquil world, but we don't. And if our times are difficult and perplexing, so are they challenging and filled with opportunity."The Declaration of Independence itself is a direct offspring of this great tract. Jefferson and the others charged with developing the document were well aware of Paine and had the opportunity to evaluate his words and to use his methods in creating our declaration, and this takes nothing away from their genius. This is a document that can be read in short order, and it is free at the Kindle Store. How can you say no to giving it a try?

It might seem odd to say, but this book has the best criticism of Monarchism that I've ever read. Monarchism is one of those political philosophies that many people do not tend to encounter regularly, so they do not have a good grasp of the arguments against it, on that basis alone this book is worth reading. I think that for any American common sense it is a good book to read as it is a good primer on early America political thought. I have given this 4 stars in lieu of 5 on account of the "appendices". To my understanding the appendices were added in later additions as responses to some criticisms which had arisen. There is nothing wrong with the appendices per se but they are not nearly as punchy or poignant as the rest of the work, I appreciate their including but I think they did bring down the overall polish of the work somewhat.

These are unabridged versions of two historic, well-known pamphlets by the revolutionary 18th century British-born American philosopher, author, and political theorist, Thomas Paine.Jeff Moon gives superlative performances in his narration of Common Sense, as well as in The Age of Reason. I've always been better able to comprehend such complex writings when they are read aloud to me. Jeff Moon has a smooth, professional, conversative tone and voice-quality that greatly increase my ability to consume and digest dense writings like Paine's. As always, Jeff, well done. To fellow listeners, I recommend this audio version for its high quality production.I was provided a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for my unbiased review. Many thanks for this opportunity!

A therapist recommended this book to me. I honestly had a difficult time going through the first few pages because this book really hits the heart like no other. It's as if she knows what's going on in my head. Of course, it's not to overgeneralize...yet at the same time, this book is something I feel is necessary for me right now.As I mentioned in the title, it touches a VERY sensitive part of the heart.I don't want to even look at it, I don't want to deal with it, and I don't want to keep crying when I think about it.At the same time, this book will politely beckon me to do so - so I can face it, deal with it, and accept it.I highly recommend for those who experience challenging, almost destructive, relationships with food & body image.I am still on the journey - and I can't read too many pages at once. Sometimes, I just end up breaking down inside and out.

This has been a transformational book for me. I have both the kindle version, which I read years ago and loved, as well as the audible version, which I have listened to three times and I would absolutely recommend. This is one of those rare books that transforms you as you read (or, especially, listen to). I struggled with on-and-off bulimia for over 20 years and, while I haven't purged in several years, the mindset is still something I have carried with me. I am finally beginning to acknowledge my feelings and preferences and ideas - my perceptions are important and valid, even if others don't see them or agree. I have always been a people pleaser, melding my personality to suit whomever I was with. This book has helped me to gently see how to change that and how to validate not only my opinions and feelings, but others', too. She says that every person she has ever worked with has had to find her voice and learn to be assertive in order to overcome their eating disorder, and that is certainly true of me. I find that I have no need for food when I acknowledge my feelings and accept them. I am learning to pay attention to my dreams and am learning about myself through them. There are so many gems in this book. It may sound funny that learning by metaphor would have any practical application for recovery, but I have found it SO much more effective than the books that give you checklists of behavior modification and homework assignments. I love myself more, I validate myself more, and in so doing, I love others more and respect their boundaries, because I am setting my own. Buy this book - it is a gentle, loving approach to understanding why you have this disordered eating - it's the best you knew how to do at the time. And now you can learn to love yourself into new behavior that naturally evolves because you are addressing the underlying needs that went unmet before. Buy it!!

If you're looking for a book that just tells you how to not have eating disorder symptoms, this is not the book for you! This book is for those who are looking for healing--TRUE, DEEP, REAL HEALING. I read this book in less than a day. Now I'm going back through it more slowly to take it all in. This is the first eating disorder book I have read (and I have read MANY) that talks about healing from an eating disorder. It isn't about whose symptoms are worse or yet another depressing memoir. This author uses metaphors, stories, analogies to reach your deeper psyche. It's an enjoyable read, yet a deep read. Look at her website for an example called The Log (www.dranitajohnston.com). I can't suggest this book enough.

I encountered this book when my relationship with food reached a peak of dysfunction. I went to a therapist, and in our first session she recommended this book. As soon as I started the book, I began to cry. It resonated with deep seated feelings that I had carried for a long time. I continued to cry as I read this book chapter by chapter, night after night. The book helped me see my dysfunctional eating in an entirely different way— that food was not the real problem, it was a “red herring.” The real problem was my relationship with my emotions, with myself, with others, and with the world around me. This beautifully written book with its many relevant fables helped give me perspective on the issues that I faced. I continued to turn to it as high levels of stress or emotion led to dysfunctional eating. I also very much appreciated Johnston's feminist perspective and her challenges to Western norms.I still struggle with disordered eating, but now I have so many more tools to help cope— both from this book and through therapy. I know this journey will continue for some time and I must continue to face the “tiger” of my relationship with food.

Incredibly insightful book that combines literature and research from the 1970s feminist spirituality movement with contemporary psychology and has an almost anthropological approach with the inclusion of many multicultural folk tales. Stunning read and its principles can be adapted for a variety of addictive behaviors and mental illnesses, or for general mental wellness.

I was only in the first chapter when this book started opening my eyes. If you'e ready to read something like this, if you want to know the real reasons why you eat the way you do then this is the book for you. I obsess over every calorie that goes into my mouth, I think about food all the time, because I have to control it, or it will control me. Or so I thought. This book made me see that food and my relationship with it already controls me. In our society we are taught that there is only one ideal, one perfect body and yet less than 4% of women have that body and yet almost every one of us strives for it when it is impossible. Who tells us how we should look? Men. It's not a male bashing book at all but you have to realize that we live in a male dominated society and everything and I do mean everything stems from that. As long as we let other people control our minds and how we feel about ourselves, our lives are not our own.A powerful book, if you're ready it will help you change your relationship with food.

Amazing book, super helpful for anyone who has struggled with an eating disorder, after my nutritionist told me about this and I read it, I've recommended it to so many friends.
