I read a LOT of addiction memoirs and I know a LOT of lawyers. Everything Brian writes rings true to my experience. He knows these two worlds inside and out, and tells his story with perfect balance, combining personal experience with current research and statistics.What's especially rare and beautiful here though, is his candor and openness. He completely owns his personal journey (in all its good/bad/ugly glory), then shares equally personal stories from colleagues with utmost compassion and understanding. This book and its author are valuable assets to the recovery community and our understanding of addiction's various manifestations.I've read more addiction memoirs than I can count, but Brian's is the only one I can think of that tackles this specific issue of addiction in the legal profession, and he really does it well. It's a conversation that needs to be had, and needs to be had right now.
Brian describes in painful and transparent detail the life unmanagability of the (frequently) dually addicted. The contrast he reveals between intelligence and behavioral addiction clearly supports the diagnosis of "disease" given by doctors today. Underneath the two surface addictions of eating disorder through body dysmorphia and substance addiction, he describes what is referred to as "relationship addiction"- childhood issues not unpacked in a balanced way when becoming an adult. The mixed impacts, particularly the negative ones, translate and reoccur as "the repetition compulsion" of the childhood pain. His deep willingness to share his story shows humility and self awareness. I've known Brian for a number of years and did not think his first courageous book on his own body dysmorphic disorder could ever be toped. However, he proved me wrong! As a fellow attorney I applaud Brian for not only once against disclosing his own struggles and trials and tribulations with addiction, but showing light on the profession and how so many lawyers become frustrated with their careers begining in law school and lead a self destructive path of drug and alcohol abuse. Brian's own revelation into his own recovery will inspire people of all professions struggling with addiction and provide for an entertaining and inspiring read. However, Brian doesn't just create a biography into his own triumph of beating his addiction, but provides insight and stories from other attorneys who have had their own personal setbacks yet have managed to become successful in beating them through recovery treatment. I would recommend this book to all and if you are an attorney or former or current addict of any kind, it is an essential read that can't be passed up. So far the book of 2017!
The Addicted Lawyer is outstanding on numerous levels and should be mandatory reading in high schools, tech schools, colleges, graduate schools, and in the workplace. Why? Because the book goes far further than Brian’s heroic triumph over the addiction that tore through his life, bringing him to the edge of suicide. Regardless of whether one uses alcohol or drugs to numb their pain, Brian takes you backstage and candidly exposes the boy and man he saw in the mirror every day. The fat kid who was ridiculed and bullied. The boy, with a negative self-image, who turned into a man who was anxiety ridden, depressed, and craving acceptance. Admirably, Brian does not blame others for his problems. He does, however, expose to the world that there are many psychological factors that can trigger mental health problems and addiction. We all have problems. Understanding the “triggers†and getting help before they potentially metastasize into Brian’s story is one more reason to read this book.
This is the second book of Brian Cuban's that I've read. I really enjoyed reading this book as Brian shares some of the darkest times of his life to help others. It was a captivating book so it wasn't easy to put down. I was able to read it on two of my flights last week. This is a must read book that will really open your eyes to the world of addiction and what others are struggling with on a day to day basis. The only way to fight this terrible issue is to bring awareness to others. I applaud Brian for sharing parts of his life that most people wouldn't have the courage to share, but in the end it's helping others.
Brian speaks with an honesty you don't see in a lot of these types of memoirs - it's immediately evident his desire to share his experiences with enough people that no member of the legal profession (or anyone else, for that matter) feels they're going through their struggles alone. Brian could easily coast on his famous last name and spend all of the energy he does sharing his stories burying them. Instead, he is an outspoken advocate for change in one of the world's oldest professions, one that's frankly long overdue for a good introspective look at its culture and well-being of students, practitioners, and practitioners-to-be. I can't recommend Brian's voice and message enough. Every professional should read this book.
