After watching the movie "Ghost and the Darkness" I wanted to read the original story that was the basis for the movie. At first I bought the paperback book of the same title as the movie, however that was essentially a carbon copy of the movie. In the back of the book was a reference to the original story, "The Man-Eaters Of Tsavo". I ordered it and what a great story! The original story is even more compelling than the movie. I liked it so much I bought a second copy for a friend that is an avid hunter and sportsman in his own right.

The Man-Eaters of Tsavo by J. H. Patterson is available in several editions. It's sort of confusing which one to buy. Here are some notes on each edition:The Man-Eaters of Tsavo (Peter Capstick Libary Series).Publisher: St. Martins Press, 1985. 384 pages.When The Man-Eaters of Tsavo was originally published in 1907, it contained a wealth of photos and a map. Photos appeared on every two to three pages. These photos showed many local scenes, as well as the infamous lions. These photos are very valuable for establishing a sense of place that words alone can't do. Beware of inexpensive reprints that omit all the photos and the map. The quality of the photo reproductions is not great in the Capstick Library edition. But these are the best looking photos in any edition currently available. This edition is virtually identical to the original book. The page sequence is the same, with only the addition of some new preface pages. This is the book to buy; however, for some strange reason it's hard to find on Amazon. If you search for "tsavo", you'll find used copies of this book at horribly inflated prices. But this book is still in print. Search for "tsavo capstick" and you'll find it--along with very reasonably priced used copies (under $10).Man Eaters Of Tsavo [Hardcover].Publisher: St. Martins Press, 1985. 384 pages.If you search for "tsavo" on Amazon, this is the hardcover edition of this book that you'll find. You'll likely see no trace of the Capstick edition. Well, it's the same book. Unfortunately, "Man Eaters of Tsavo [Hardcover]" is being sold like it's a collector's item, at inflated prices. Don't fall for this. Get the Capstick Library book listed above.The Man-eaters of Tsavo.Publisher: SMK Books, 2009. 152 pages.If all you want is the text, if you don't care about seeing approximately 100 photographs, if you don't want a map, then this is a reasonably priced alternative. All the text from the original edition is compressed onto 152 pages, in a tiny font. The map and all photos have been removed. You can get a used hardcover copy of the Capstick Library book for only $2 to $3 more than the SMK book, so I would find it hard to justify buying the SMK edition.The Man-Eaters of Tsavo: And Other East African Adventures (Classic Reprint). Publisher: Forgotten Books, 2010. 360 pages.This is a duplicate of the original book. A library copy was pulled and photographed page by page. The reproductions of the photographs from the original book are horribly muddy--and virtually worthless. Strangely, if you search for "tsavo" on Amazon, this book seems to be a reasonably priced alternative. So many people have apparently purchased this edition. Don't be fooled. Look for the Capstick Library book instead, which only costs a few dollars more and has better reproduction of the photos (as well as a few extra pages in the preface).The Lions of Tsavo: Exploring the Legacy of Africa's Notorious Man-Eatersby Bruce D. PattersonThis is a different Patterson entirely. And thus a different book. Bruce Patterson is a scientist who recently studied the lions of Tsavo, while J. H. Patterson is the hunter who shot the infamous Tsavo lions. The scientist's book is good. But you should be aware that this isn't the tale told by the hunter.Ghosts of Tsavo : Stalking the Mystery Lions of East Africaby Philip CaputoThis a contemporary tale of a journalist following in J.H. Patterson's steps and investigating the lions of Tsavo. This is a good book. The first chapter is incredible as he retells the story of the lions that killed a mind-boggling number of railroad workers (possibly over 120 people died). The subsequent chapters are of a more personal nature as Caputo journeys to Africa and looks for the maneless Tsavo lions.I hope this helps!

This book has all the charm and grace that it should. While he is most indeed a hunter it is written in such way that you can't be angry about it. The writer is very detailed about his adventures and they're a wonderful read. He's smart charming and funny I laughed a few times he also writes about all the different tribes he mets and that alone is worth reading. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes English books and anyone who wants to learn more about the history of Africa.

Incredible account of dangers, hardships, courage and the pursuit of survival in Victorian Africa. This is a account of lions who seem to be almost supernatural and always one step ahead of man. If you like sitting on the edge of your seat, this is a read for you. It's a story you will always remember.

A well-written, easy read, without the usual stuffy, pretentious overstated prose characteristic of the period in which it was written. Very enjoyable. And the story goes well beyond the Tsavo incident, into the constructing of his bridges and his trophy-hunting. Even the insanity of killing everything in sight---while pillaging Africa---was made tolerable reading by the author. Over all, a revealing glimpse into the mind of a Victorian "English gentleman" hunter---which should give any sane person pause, and thank the gods that the only "proper Englishmen" are now just figureheads. I hope.

Colonel Patterson's first hand account of dealing with the Maneating Lions of Tsavo is riveting reading indeed! Also entertaining is his description of conditions and happenings along the trackway and his interactions with workers and natives alike. While the actual settling of the lions makes for the highlight of the book, Colonel Patterson's handling of the mutiny of the workers and their conspiracy to murder him is capital reading. Colonel Patterson was a very brave man who never flinched from what he saw as his duty and you will be glad to have gotten to know this humble hero after finishing the book.

This was by far the best pretest that I have seen all year. The explanations are practically on a level with UWORLD and were very helpful for review during the last couple of weeks in the clerkship. The questions are relevant to the topics you will see covered on the shelf and fill in the small gaps left behind by UWORLD. I would highly suggest buying this book. For the shelf I used First Aid Step 2 CK (all of the sections except pediatrics, ob/gyn, psych, ambulatory, and emergency), UWORLD (all IM questions), and this book and I scored a 98 on the shelf.

This book was not as big a hit with my 10-month-old granddaughter as Shapes or Numbers (the other 2 we have in this series). It seems to have too many birds and nests. She does seem to be fascinated with the pages showing the holes of sand martin nests in the side of a cliff. Perhaps when she is older it will resonate more. There are certainly pages with animal homes that she enjoys more than either the bird or the insect homes.

It is a very well done board book for kids. The photography is well done and the quality of the book is good. Pictures for kids should be excellent since this is how they learn to discriminate mundane vs excellent.

I bought this for my resident with dementia, it is now a favorite in our home. Great book, great condition, timely delivery.

Professor Michael Wilson is emeritus Professor of Microbiology at University College London (UCL), where he has worked since 1983. He has taught students on Bachelor and Master’s courses in microbiology covering many aspects of the subject, including the human microbiota, infectious diseases, bacterial pathogenesis, microbial biofilms, infection control, and antimicrobial chemotherapy. He also actively engaged in research at UCL, and in recognition of his research achievements, he was awarded a DSc in 1999 by the National University of Ireland and in 2011 was appointed Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Minister of National Education. His main research interests are the indigenous microbiota of humans, biofilms, bacterial pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance, and the development of new antimicrobial strategies. He has a great interest in translational research and has applied for 13 patents for inventions in the fields of light-activated antimicrobial agents and water purification. In 1990 he received the National Westminster/British Petroleum Innovation Award and in 1991 the Toshiba "Invention of the Year" Award for inventing a low-technology method of sterilizing water for use in developing countries. He has published 334 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 238 conference abstracts, and 11 books, one of which, Bacteriology of Humans: An Ecological Perspective, was awarded the first prize in the Royal Society of Medicine and Society of Authors Medical Book Awards in 2008. He has supervised the research projects of 35 PhD students and 46 MSc students. He is also enthusiastic about communicating the results of his research to the general public. Consequently, he has organised exhibitions for, and given talks to, the public on a number of topics including the human microbiota, antibiotic resistance, and light-activated antimicrobial agents.

What a wonderful introduction to gardening from an entrepreneurial perspective. While it will be useful to those gardening on an acre or more, I can see that I can also turn a smaller plot into some profit, which is quite exciting to me.This book serves as a useful primer. It walks you through the many considerations one must explore while determining whether entrepreneurial gardening is for them. You consider the space, different factors that could impact what you would grow, how much maintenance it would require. You explore many other useful things, such as quality seeds, introduction to some soil considerations (I suspect you may need an additional volume if you really want to go deep into understanding soil, but I feel this did an excellent job of introducing me to WHAT I would need to consider, things I never knew to even ask). It also addresses the types of crops, including whether you are looking to harvest yourself, then sell, or if you want to operate a pick your own operation.It also explored some of the nuances of running a pick your own operation, things I hadn't thought to consider, but which would be important to address, lest you bump up against a costly expense.I want to address that, actually: I found that the price of the book was SO justifiable, considering the costly mistakes it's helping me avoid! I mean, I'm the kind of person, I may have said, "I could garden in this space, and then sell some of the extras!" and then jumped in. Many dollars and mistakes later, sure, I may have sold some of the produce, but I may have been operating at a loss. I feel like this very reasonably priced volume introduced me to the nuances I had to explore and consider as I was discerning whether entrepreneurial gardening was something I wanted to explore. THAT is where it truly shines. If you're considering this path, I encourage you to make this your first book. It's a quick but informative read; all of the important stuff, none of the fluff. I've looked at other gardening books, but I don't want to read through hundreds of pages when first exploring if this is for me. No, rather, I want an overview, introducing me to the questions I need to ask. The quality of our lives is so deeply determined by the quality of questions we ask! T his book will help you ask all the right ones. Again, that's where it shines. Make this your starting point. Don't waste money on gardening books hundreds of pages long until you're sure of which questions to ask. Then you will know better what other books make sense to add to the collection that this book will begin :)

As a gardening "entrepreneur," I can honestly say this book is only a very limited overview of the possibilities for someone who may be thinking about using gardening as a means of revenue. I currently sell items at farmers' markets and to local restaurants. I was hoping this book could give me some ideas and tips for increasing my business. Unfortunately, it is extremely limited and just good to give a general idea of what you can "maybe" do.

A five year old could of written. It's more of a pamphlet then a book. No references. Only has about 15 pages. No very informative. Big dissapointment. I do not recommend. I'm returning it.

I am a manual therapist in practice for 23 years and had to swallow my pride on this one, and realize it really, really works. The only thing that bothers me is that her products are on the expensive side, and her fees for professional training lean to extortionist prices, but thankfully, with a little practice and some foundational knowledge of anatomy and physiology, anyone could teach this method to others. As a health care practitioner I am referring all of my clients to purchase her products and use them at home, and I suggest that readers RUN, not walk to buy this. It will change your health and with a healthy diet, will help keep you away from doctors. As our healthcare system continues to deteriorate, its more important than ever for all of us to take responsibility for our health, and this tool will go a tremendously long way in emancipating you from bondage to our broken medical system. Its health freedom in your own hands! Well worth the investment.UPDATE: While the method is still great, the customer service of Sue Hitzmann's company is horrible and the products are overpriced. The foam roller they sell was back ordered for a month and very expensive, but you can order a much less expensive soft foam roller on amazon. Also you can buy 16 soft small indoor "golf" balls in a sporting goods section for $4 and harder balls (soft and hard) at the dollar store. Her method is great, book is great, customer service is awful (they don't even have a phone number-you can only reach them via email) and products can be substituted with way less expensive versions.

Important note: You MUST have a soft foam roller and very small, very soft ball to use the techniques in this book. And, this therapy is not a replacement for strength training, aerobics, or muscle stretching. The workshop isn't a requirement; you can definitely learn the technique from the book. All you need is 10 minutes a day once you learn the "method. This is an excellent book! It's going to cost about $95 for book and equipment, so check my overview of pricing at the bottom of my review for more info.I just happened to be watching Dr. Oz and he had Sue Hitzmann on his show talking about and demonstrating her new "MELT" Method. MELT stands for Myofascial Energetic Length Technique and focuses on hydrating your connective tissue and easing pain. Connective tissue is just below the surface of the skin and is a component of the whole body that is typically overlooked. This book will definitely help you understand and work with your connective tissue to improve health and well being.Since I have my own home yoga, fitness, and meditation practice I was intrigued by Sue's theories and purchased the Kindle version of the book right away. I also got on her web site meltmethod dot com to find out more and was pleasantly surprised that she was having a workshop/class right here in Portland Oregon the same weekend! I signed up for the Sunday noon, 1.5 hour class with book signing afterwards.Workshop: I attended Sue's workshop which was well attended by many people in my same age group 40-65, both males and females. Sue came in and with her high-energy she explained in very simple terms the theories behind her MELT method. She is a very captivating speaker! Then we learned all about the hands and foot technique which uses a small, very soft rubber ball (measures 1-1/2 inches across). You use a series of point compressions and various movements what she refers to as pressing, gliding, shearing, rinsing, and friction. Then she moved on to similar techniques using a soft roller. Excellent workshop and well worth the time and money if you can attend, check her web site!FYI: All of the material presented in her workshop is also covered in her book. The book includes more techniques than the workshop covers.Sue's MELT techniques are not new, they are traditional techniques of reflexology, chi, somatic-movement, self-massage, and even dry brushing and uses pressure-points and movement of lymphatic fluids. However, Sue's approach is a very unique combination of these traditional techniques in a high-energy, quick-fix, yet body-gentle environment. Her methods will help you get in touch with your body's alignment and you could very well heal yourself or at least reduce your amount of chronic pain. Using her methods over a period of weeks will definitely help you with pain management.MELT addresses the four effects of "stuck stress" (which accumulates in the connective tissue and causes pain) with the "Four R's" which are: Reconnect (Body Sensing), Rebalance (whole body balance), Rehydrate (restore hydration in the connective tissue), and Release (decompression) in an absolutely wonderful combination that will get results!I initially ordered the Kindle version of the book, but was concerned if I was actually getting as much as the printed book. So, at the book signing I also purchased the hard-bound, printed book, so I have both the Kindle and Paper book that I am reviewing.The book is broken into easy to follow Parts and Chapters, but I would definitely recommend reading the first 100 pages of the book to fully understand the MELT method before starting the practice. Part four is excellent once you understand the methods and gets you going with your own self-treatment plan. All the movements are lined-out and include a short description and photo of each the positions and movements.Comparing Kindle to Paper Book:Note: I am using Kindle on an iPad1. The tables in the book are easy to read, but in the Kindle version the columns don't line up very well and they are difficult to follow, especially in landscape mode.2. You get all the same demonstration photos (Sue is the model) in both the Kindle and Paper versions. Both are of low-quality and although you can click on the Kindle version photos, they are quite grainy and do not provide any enhancement over the smaller photos in both Kindle and Paper versions.3. I would opt for the kindle version over the paper version both for ease of reading and cost.Reason for my Amazon 4 start rating:I marked down this book for quality reasons, not content. The paper version is printed on very low quality paper, brown-ish newspaper print in simple black ink (no color photos and the black and white photos look low-quality/low-res). I was disappointed that page 157 was ripped out of the book down the center of the page, so this page is completely unreadable ...not a big deal since I have the Kindle version too :) For $26 I would expect better quality paper. I was disappointed since it had a full-color glossy hardcover, but when I opened the book it was cheesy, poor-quality I would have opted for softcover over hardcover and used better, longer lasting paper. Also, I don't believe the book was printed in the USA, but it's not apparent anywhere in the printed book. It doesn't say "printed in China," but my guess is that it is printed somewhere overseas. I believe her rollers and balls are probably also manufactured in China :( For these reasons I marked it down by 1 star.I have to mention, I think Sue Hitzmann has a good thing going here that will probably help a lot of people by avoiding surgery related to chronic pain and getting off pain medications, but I also feel like it is somewhat "gimicy" that she's trying to sell her balls and roller. I understand everyone's trying to make a living and be successful, so I really can't knock it, it's just an observation. I believe in her heart she is truly trying to help people heal themselves, so in this regard the book and Sue's work deserve a 1000+ stars!!!Sue's techniques are truly helpful. I learned so much from her in the workshop and reading and following her book. More than anything her book, instructions, and techniques really helped me to know and get more in touch with what connective tissue feels like over plain muscle stretching. I will definitely integrate her techniques into my home practice.Sue definitely knows her stuff and she learned about connective tissue from the experts and even by dissecting cadavers! First up, I sought out this book because there's just no way I'm going to pay someone else to give me a massage. Lots of reasons for that, but that's the bottom line. I wanted to find some relief from aches and pains that I thought must be due to tension and built up stress, and this seemed a likely starting place that would be more comfortable than trying to work with a hard roller.People are complaining that it seems too hard to get to the meat of things in the book. (There really isn't a quick-start section in the book, though she does walk you through a few things early on, those exercises aren't the main lessons, and they're just an introduction.) In some ways I agree that this not quite ideal, but then again she's crammed a memoir, textbook, and workbook all in one volume, and intersperses bits of each as you go along. Towards the end, there are more specific sections saying, essentially, 'if you want to treat this specific issue, do this, then this ...', and there's a lot to absorb before you get there. Working gently, with focus and attention is pretty much essential. Without learning what you're doing, why and how, I think it would be awfully easy to work sloppily and inattentively, which would probably decrease the effectiveness of the work. (That's my experience, at least. I have to be focused on what I'm doing, and paying attention.)Me? I'm just glad the book EXISTS, whatever quirks of presentation it might have. I don't live in a part of the world where Sue might visit for workshops or anything else, and I don't have the freedom to travel, so this do-it-yourself technique is pretty much my only option. Better to flip through some pages, than do without.Unlike some reviewers, I was not much annoyed by her writing style. I've read some really bad fitness/health books by people with more enthusiasm than material, and this book is leagues ahead of those.The author is clearly kind of obsessive, but I don't think the book (or the method) would exist without that, so I'm not distressed by it. She's totally committed to sharing what she's learned, excited about her discoveries, fascinated by what she's learned, and amazed by the experiences she had along the way. Sharing this energy is part of the fun of the book, experiencing things she felt and thought along the way, and how one thing led to another. She's done her own research over years of work, and didn't copy someone else to get here, and I think that's admirable. If it takes her a while to explain all that, so be it. Her story and her journey are very personal, and apparently very deeply felt, and seems quite genuine. This personal style of presentation doesn't bother me.The technical/anatomical stuff doesn't fascinate me quite as much as the rest of it, but I was interested to read about it, if nothing else to understand the parts of the body I'm working with.If you're looking for a quick-start guide, the card set that comes with the hand/foot kit is really great, but it seems to me that the cards and the book (and the video, for that matter) don't quite match up. I'm assuming she added small things as things were in production on each item, so each has a little bit that's not in the others. The bits in question are interesting additions, but don't necessarily diminish the experience of working with the balls and the rollers.A very brief session can bring a lot of relief, and it seems to me so long as you manage to do some pressure point work, gliding, shearing and rinsing, first with the soft balls then the harder ones, or just on the soft roller, that's plenty. :shrug: I like having a variety of options.I just try to incorporate a bit of MELTing into every day, just to get a routine going, and it seems to be 'enough' pretty much no matter what I do.The author does stress the importance of doing self assessments before and after each session, it really does help me notice the changes that are taking place. (For example, the difference in my hands seems kind of subtle, but it's there, and over time has gotten better still. I might not have noticed, if I hadn't made the effort to keep track.) It's possible that part of the self-assessment is more meditative than some people are comfortable with, but I do find it therapeutic and helpful. (It's a physical check-in, noticing what's going on with the body and limbs, noticing spots of tension or release, etc., not anything metaphysical/prayerful.)As I've gotten older, I've had some aches and pains that came and went, stiffness that crept up on me, and I'd begun to assume that they were an inevitable part of the aging process.After having worked with the MELT Method for a few weeks on my own, some of those aches are gone, and I feel more limber and alert than I have in ages. Moving is easier, and I just feel more comfortable in my own skin. Whew. Who knew that was even possible?Sure, if I don't keep up with the techniques, the aches and stiffness come creeping back, (though staying hydrated as she recommends is very helpful), but at least now I know there's something I can DO to help them remain at bay.I bought the book first, just to see whether or not the techniques were doable.I even did a few things on my hard roller (which she cautions against, guess I missed that advice early in the book), and was definitely impressed. Wrong roller or not, the first night I used the MELT techniques, I slept better and more comfortably than I have in a long time.Once I realized that I needed to find a softer option while waiting for the soft roller and hand/foot kit to arrive, (didn't realize what level of firmness/softness was required til I saw Sue on youtube holding/bending a soft roller) I got the idea to buy one of those foam noodles kids play with in the pool, since they were super cheap at the big box store. I covered that with two layers of 3/4" foam from an otherwise awful and useless exercise mat I'd bought years ago and never used. Still firm, but softer than the hard roller.I rummaged around in a few stores, and found some rubber balls, and one little soft golf ball made of foam that I thought might do, and started experimenting with the hand and foot techniques.My backordered products didn't take TOO long to arrive, maybe 17 business days from order to arrival on the roller? Less for the hand/foot kit.I do prefer the MELT brand products to my cheap-y DIY versions, the balls in the kit are all a bit smaller than most of the ones I'd been using, and the soft balls are softer than anything I'd found (though the foam golf ball does come close, and works fine for the hand exercise where you work each finger, pressing first pad and tip into the ball one at a time.)My DIY pool-noodle soft roller with two layers of softer foam on top of the rather firm noodle is pretty much just the right firmness, but I do prefer the real one.The things I've picked up from her book that I've been trying to incorporate into my day:1) Staying hydrated.2) Getting a bit of sunlight, out doors, every day. (Shade is fine.)3) Noticing what I'm feeling in my body. Aches, the urge to move, energy flowing, etc., whatever it is.4) Noticing how movement seems to ease my stiffness, and how warming up makes moving less jarring.5) Soft foam roller self-massage just feels good, so I don't dread it, put it off, or think of something else to do.The one thing I do have trouble with is doing the MELT techniques at least an hour before bed. Not sure why, but some days it gets pretty late before I get around to it. I've decided to accept this as proof that I'm more active than I have been in a while, and that's a good thing.For me, this is a do-able, adaptable set of self-massage techniques that help me feel more limber, active and comfortable.I hope she comes out with more of the quick-start cards for the work on the rest of the body, I find the ones for hands and feet very convenient. Plus, the book is kinda heavy, and hard to maneuver when I'm doing certain moves.The basic techniques are pretty simple, and once you get the idea, not hard to do.
