I'm finally reading the bible and it is easy to understand. I wanted to read it to make my own adult decision regarding this religion.

I really like the feel and look of this book! The crown on the cover is a nice touch. The size of the book is great. It's slim so fits nice for travel. Words are a good size for me but if you have trouble seeing get the giant print. But it's missing a few things. Good quality. It is slightly larger than an iPad mini. The tooled leather design is lovely and feels soft and of high quality. The large print is fantastic and easy to read. I love the metallic silver page edging. The dictionary/concordance is definitely not exhaustive but is a plus in any Bible. I wanted a more straightforward read than my amplified version and this works perfectly for me. I am extremely well satisfied with this purchase, especially at a $24.44 price. Priceless words at a priceless value.

The print is so tiny. Other than that, it's a nice version of the Bible. I've added a photo for comparison of size.

I like the large life application section. It also has a reading plan that may or may not come in handy. The cover is nice. What I don't like is that there is really no space to write notes. I also wish they had started books on a separate page rather than immediately following the previous one mid page. The margins are 1/4" and the general layout is what you would find in a bible from the dollar store. The size of print is fine for me but it is not really large print. Also, the couple pages of advertising at the end is a bit tacky. For what I was wanting, I would have passed on this one if I had seen the inside.

This was a gift for my husband, he loves it! He has been struggling to read his study bible because of the small font, this one is much easier for him to read. He likes the color (I was afraid it was too feminine) and was pleased with the introduction of each of the books of the bible.

I previously owned a NLT Personal Sized Bible that wore some holes in the cover, so decided to replace it. My first NLT had much smaller type but was readable and very compact. I loved it.I took a chance on this without being able to see a sample page. (Please, Amazon and Bible printers, provide sample pages for your Bibles!) I own a NRSV Bible with 12 point type, so figured that the new NLT would be close in size. Now that I have the NLT, comparing them together, the NLT's text actually appears larger than the NRSV. It's very large all right. I see Tyndale had their font designed for them, Lucerna, that has a very large x-height. (The term x-height refers to the height of the lowercase x in a given typeface at any given size.) The large x height makes the font seem larger and for most people more readable. My personal taste would have preferred a 11 pt font size, plenty big but still very readable. This would have reduced the thickness of the Bible somewhat and also would have fit better within the page layout. But for those who wish to shed their reading glasses, they won't be disappointed here.I try not to buy red letter version Bibles. I find the red print distracting and really not needed. Also, often times in the printing, the red can become lightened into a more pinkish color and very hard to read. This version NLT, however, seems to have a consistent dark red (no pink) throughout which is very readable. A very big improvement.The binding and cover seem very durable. I actually prefer the imitation leather cover over real leather. This version is a two toned brown so will be appropriate for both men and women. There also are versions in pink and brown etc. for the ladies. The paper thickness is just about right. Thin enough to keep the thickness of the Bible reasonable but opaque enough to block out MOST of the reverse side text from bleeding through. I have had premium Bible paper so thin that the bleeding through of the opposite side's text made for difficult reading.The translation I believe is a very good one. It utilizes a thought for thought style of translation that some would consider paraphrasing. However, this type of translation often can make obscure biblical language crystal-clear compared to a more woodenly literal translation. The translation was made by a large number of front ranking evangelical biblical scholars and then fine-tuned by editors who honed the English style and fluidity. Consequently, the NLT would make a great reading Bible, especially for reading large chunks of the Bible at a time. Of course, use more than one translation (zillions of them free online) but this translation is a great one in the arsenal. For another highly readable and accurate translation that rivals the NLT, check out the recently completed Common English Bible.Glad to see Bible printers upping the print size. It seems incredulous to me that people would want to read the itty-bitty font size of so many of the compact Bibles these days. I can heartily recommend this version of the NLT as a very readable choice for a Bible.

This is not a review of the Holy Bible nor of this translation, as the former is of course a 5 star. This is a complaint that the texts wraps way too close to the binding at the center, and there's not enough spacing there. Everytime the words on the left page drifts to the right end, you have peel the book back to read it, and same for the right side but reversed. This sucks when reading - 1 star.

There are so many reasons why Beach was so as the author of this fantastic book; his personal family ties to the subject, his unerring knowledge of how ships work, his detailed research into the crew and local population. Meant to be read more than once.

My dad was interested in this book that he saw advertised in a Naval Institute magazine to which he subscribes. He has read several works by this author and enjoys his style. I found a near-perfect but used copy at Amazon for a great price. (This copy is marked as belonging to the collection aboard the Bonhome Richard.) My dad is thrilled with the book!

I have been a long time reader of naval and maritime history and only heard of this incident last year (2000). It covers a period in naval history that doesn't get much notice from the general public (1916 when the US Marines landed in the Dominican Republic to restore order). The author is a well known and respected chronicler of naval history, deservedly so. The incident is a about a tidal wave, a phenomenon not yet understood by science (or the Navy), that besets an armored cruiser (captained by the author's father) while it was anchored in Santo Domingo. The main problem was how to get up to full steam so they would be able to head out to sea and safety in time. The story gets very exciting when it talks about the problems in the coal fired boiler rooms as the waves washed water down the stacks.This would make a great episode for the TV show JAG because a captain is ultimately resposible for damage to his ship and this one had to face a court martial to establish what happened. I won't reveal the fate of the ship, the crew, or Capt. Beach because that's a big part of the story, but it's a very exciting tale that needs to be remembered.It reads like an adventure novel where it takes a chapter or two to set the stage and then the excitement builds to fever pitch as the situation unexpectedly deteriorates. I only gave it 4 stars instead of a 5 because the author had to repeat sections of the incident from the perspective of different locations and people. But it was so exciting at that point that the repetition was OK because you didn't want to put the book down. The heroism of the crew fighting an uncontrollable force of nature earned them 3 Medals of Honor.A great read.

Wreck of the Memphis is the story of a Navy cruiser, Memphis, formerly named Tennessee. It is the story of an afternoon in the Dominican Republic, where in less than an hour, the ship went from being fully prepared for war, to a beach wreck at the base of a cliff. It is the story of a ship and it's captain who happens to have been the author's father.The event which lead to the loss of the Memphis was US intervention in the Dominican Republic. It is period in US Naval history that is little known and less written about. Captain Beach's book fills in some of the details of this time.The aftermath of the loss of the Memphis is as equally interesting as the events leading up to the loss of the ship. Now comes the question 'Why did it happen' to be answered. The man held responsible is the captain of the ship and in this case the author's father is the man being asked the question. The verdict and future career of senior Captain Beach make for interesting reading.This is a fine book and an excellent read. I first read this book when it was first published and I have read it periodically ever since. It is a great addition to any nautical library.

This is a really great book for anyone interested in Naval history. It was well packe and arrived on time.

This book is a well told tale of what happened to the U.S.S. Memphis in 1916. His father being the captain of the ship , the author had a good insight to what he went through on the ship as it was driven ashore under freak circumstances as well as the crew. Although, i think the author belabored some of the details, this book is a very good read. A long forgotten incident, I read this book back in the late 1960`s and happened to find it again on Amazon. Glad I did ............

My father was A Warrent Machinist in charge of the engine room. He is mentioned in th book. He had his lungs cooked and spent a year growing new lineing on them. Died 1928 from pneumonia,and was told if he ever got it , he would.He was removed from the Memphis by breaches bouy. The ship is still visable in Santo Domingo harbor.

This book was interesting twofold since my father was on the Memphis when it was wrecked. A good book for anyone

This would be a great resource for someone who already has some experience with cost estimating as the formulas are very good, but it is terrible at explaining the "how to". I used this book for an online course and if the course had not been relatively easy it would have been totally wasted on me. The way he tries to explain things is like he's speaking another language. The figures for the explanations are on completely different pages and you may have to flip 2-3 back to find what the author is talking about. Overall it is poorly laid out and very hard to follow.

I will join with many of the other reviewers and say that this book is a must read for anyone who has any type of self-defense weapon on their person or in their home. After reading the book, I've come to the sober conclusion that the law doesn't seem to favor the ordinary person who is simply trying to defend themselves. In order to prevail, it would seem that each person needs to have a law degree from Harvard, and the ability to slow down time in the event of lethal force situation. This is the case because the legal system, chops up your deadly force encounter, which is measured in seconds, into an esoteric academic exercise where the actions of the parties are scrutinized at the the nano-second level. One can almost imagine a panel of ancient philosophers, psychologists, and scholars evaluating who is in the right and who is in the wrong at any given fraction of a second in the timeline of events. In our system of justice, such reflection is done by the police, the DA's office, your defense attorney, and a jury of your peers -- folks who know nothing about the law.The author presents a very sobering view of how the legal system works for those who choose to defend themselves in a violent encounter. Yes, you may have killed the bad guy, and you may feel that you are right, but if the legal system choses to pursue your actions, you will have two outcomes; the price tag of your legal defense and your freedom, or, 20 years to life in prison. On several occasions, while reading, I thought that death or serious bodily injury might actually be a good option given the real possibility of jail for the rest of my life, a fate that might be assigned by a gun hostile jury or some real error I made in the deadly encounter.For all of those folks with high capacity magazines, heed this warning. Every single shot you fire in self-defense will be evaualted by the DA. As the author pointed out, there was a case where a subject fired 6 shots. Three were deemed self-defense, while the last 3 were considered attempted murder. The defender was convicted on the 3 "bad" shots and got a life sentence plus 90 years. So, a magazine with 20 rounds is a joke. If you shoot 20 rounds in a self defense case, you are in for a world of trouble with the justice system.Lastly, know your state laws. The author goes to great length to compare differences in state law for self-defense. Infact, the last third of this book, is a comprehensive digest of every state law for a meriad of serif-defense issues.This book is a must read for all gun owners.The purpose of this book, in my opinion, is to form a proper mental attitude for a self-defense situation. This book really makes you think about the "un-locks" you might have in order to draw a weapon and use it.

I purchased this book after seeing a positive review on a discussion forum from another forum member who took a live course with Andrew.I found it easy to read, entertaining and informative. I am a lawyer (but no experience with this area of law at all since law school years ago), and think it is well-suited to the general reader, as well as to lawyers or others more familiar with legal concepts and approaches - the author doesn't over-simplfy conplex concepts, but also makes the subject matter easily approachable.I also very much appreciate that the author maintains a website with up-to-date law revisions and new case law, as well as providing commentary on recent news stories / reports of defensive (or, regrettably, not) firearms use.There were a few instances of material / concepts that were substantially repeated only a paragraph or two away from previous, similar instances (*not* in the chapter summaries that are provided after each chapter) that a better job of editing might have addressed, but that did not, IMHO, detract from the overall value of the information presented or the style in which it was presented and explained.I think this book is an incredibly valuable resource for anyone who owns a firearm that might be used in a self-defense situation, and without hesitation would recommend it to the responsible firearm owner.

I am impressed with this book. I live in North Carolina and recently took a concealed carry course (which is required here prior to a concealed carry permit being issued). I bought this book because it was well reviewed. I didn't know what to expect; but, I must say, I am very impressed with this book.It is impossible to write a book that is thorough and explicit on the laws of concealed carry in all jurisdictions. That said, this book does a very fine job of approaching this task with the ever present caveat that laws in all jurisdictions are fluid things. The bulk of the book explores fundamental legal principles involved in deadly force applications, along with case law discussions applicable to specific historic instances in which deadly force was used.I honestly did not expect that this book would be so captivating. It is well written, in an informal language, that makes it very easy to comprehend and very difficult to put down once one has begun reading it.

When it comes to knowing the law when it comes to defending yourself, this is the book to read. Andrew Branca has studied the case law in all 50 states and gives you the a fairly comprehensive review. You get the 5 key ingredients for a successful self-defense case with how different states treat them. The difference between Castle doctrine, Stand your ground and self-defense. Like he says, carry a gun so you are hard to kill, know the law so you are hard to convict. Andrew Branca and Massad Ayoub are the leading experts in this area and both are must read. After reading this book, I am planning to take his class as well.

Book came in good condition, although the story itself is less than idea. Doesn't rhyme, which I was hoping for, and the examples used are not very smart. That being said, my 2 and 4 year old like it just fine.

This is my favorite fairy tale. I bought it for my 6 year old daughter to read. It's very short and doesn't really tell the story. I should have bought a book with a higher reading level.
