More Comments From ReviewersThe Way Between is a story that reached deep inside and literally grabbed my heart because it speaks to our common humanity and validates the belief that there is a another way than the course we are on. Hastings, Ed.D., Director, PeaceVoice Program, Oregon Peace Institute This novel should be read aloud to everyone, by everyone, from childhood onward. It is an auspicious beginning to a new mythology of peace, of justice, of inclusion, of conversion and transformation. Rivera Sun s care for the unobtrusive embedding of the theories of change, of the principles of conflict transformation, and the way of the human heart all conspire to allow for a tale that will inspire. It is ancient and magical and legendary. It flips the glory of big men waging war into the valorization of powerless tween girls waging peace, the sacralization of bloody combat into the lionization of nonviolent heart and mind power. It does so credibly, which is the stumbling block to most fiction writers trying to achieve what Rivera Sun actually does manage to do here. If the reader were told at the outset that an 11-year-old girl would defeat the mightiest warrior of the nation without inflicting any pain or harm this is in a medieval time of swords and teapots, warriors and monasteries you would not continue reading. But by the time it happens, you have been prepared by Sun s artful storytelling to accept even expect and demand just that outcome. Like any good plotmaster, Sun describes many setbacks, much potential, lots of inner conflicting emotions, but it s all undergirded by the unflinching idealism of youth. The girl is mixed ethnicity and raised by a third people, thus bearing the strengths and some of the challenges of all three peoples, all of whom have been either in conflict or avoiding one another. What is so poignant is that the girl is not accepted too much by any group the forest people raise her but she is not one of them and cannot follow them to their wintering place, the village boys torment her, the monastery warriors-in-training taunt her and even beat her in her early training phases but her idealism and her potential push her toward her own special destiny. The girl is the underdog at every turn but we learn to expect her to rise to meet all challenges. Her flash of serendipitous and even accidental brilliance convinces a great warrior to take her as apprentice and he teaches her the ancient, all-but-forgotten, Way Between neither the violence of the warrior nor the avoidance of the coward. No, there is no didactic artifice to teach us the particulars of principled negotiation, CLARA de-escalation, peer mediation, Sharpian or Kingian strategic civil resistance or any other of the researched competencies in the field of Peace and Conflict Studies, even though Sun is in her professional life profoundly knowledgeable of all this. Rather, Rivera Sun writes in a style as magical as Tolkien and as authentic as Twain. The reader is not once bludgeoned with the zealot s pontificating but rather is drawn to love the characters and the conclusions. This book, along with her instant classic The Dandelion Insurrection will be on the reading list next time I teach Peace Novels, my favorite summer class. Sun s appendices carry all the theoretical, competency-based, and practical teachings that she wove invisibly into her tale. She helps the reader achieve the education necessary to reify her yarn and it makes it an invitational, educational, volume. Required reading for those wishing to be the countervailing message and meaning as we head into the Age of the Avenging Autocrat. Read it soon. We need you to pass it along. A feel-good book with a thoughtful message. I read a lot of young adult literature. As a teacher of middle/early adolescents, it is important to me to read books that they might be interested in. I also just enjoy a good story. The way between is an excellent first book, though I am a little nervous about the production schedule for the following books. It does not seem like Rivera Sun is chopping at the bit to finish the series. That is my only critique as the book leaves you wanting more. So, please keep writing this series, Ms Sun! This is a story about what it means to be actively non-violent. It's a worthwhile message at a time when so much of the zeitgeist is polarizing

We are a homeschooling family that uses literature extensively for example and relatability based education sources. All if Rivera Sun's books, and poetry collection, provide these things. She writes unapologetically about critical human topics, but in a way that is so digestible that you feel INSPIRED, EXCITED, EAGER for the stories. These books are rich with all of those, and so very many more gems of wisdom, thought provoking questions, and adventure. They also serve to remind us that it does not matter who you are, where you e Bern, how big, not how small... we can all still be, see, do, live even more.I feel gifted for having Rivera Sun books not just in my home, but in my library, recently seen at my doctors office, and on a new friend's shelf.I'd like everyone to know of Rivera Sun's books, and if its left to my family, many will. We love them.

"The Way Between" is the first book I have read by this author, and I was not disappointed. I purchased the book as something to read with my children. I read it first and it has become my new favorite book. The story is engaging and we'll thought out. Some elements were a bit predictable, which for me was more comforting than boring (as it can be when things are too predictable). I loved the characters. The author really made them feel alive. But what I liked most was the message. Here is a fantastic adventure story in which to lose yourself, without the usual antagonistic violence. I can't wait to read it again, this time with my children, and let them see that there are ways to be powerful without trying to exert power over others. Despite its cost, I purchased multiple copies to give as gifts to my nieces and nephews.

I loved the sincerity of this book as well as the inspired message. I plan to read more of her titles. Glad to have discovered this fresh uncensored voice.

I LOVE this book. I love that there is a book for young readers that has action, adventure and teaches such important lessons. It made me think differently as I approached challenges or problems, looking for the way between. It inspired me. I wanted to find the martial arts taught in the book, to learn them, deeply and use their wisdom each day in my own life.

I'm thinking of my students reading this book and wondering how young is too young? The overarching message is one every child should hear, preferably from birth. Could the Third Way take hold in our own poisoned, fear- filled, divided world? This first book in the series makes me hope so.

Loved absolutely loved this book. Starting off simply as almost a fairytale would with a powerful message embedded in it.

Definitely a great gift for the upcoming generation as well as for us elders. Put a tear in my eye and bubble of laughter/joy in my spirit more than once.

I am currently renting this book from Amazon ( I think) and the experience is as follows:Pros1. Exceptional readability, for some reason the authors manage to keep your attention better than most texts, especially since it is cell bio we are talking about.2. Graphics are great and very helpful / clear. Instead of serving an almost purely aesthetic function like many texts, the figures summarize the "big picture" processes or subjects in a clear memorable manner3. The book is not cheaply made and consists of durable hardback.4. It's one of the few hard copy textbooks I get to use this semester so the away-from-computer time is much appreciated not to mention the lack of need to charge the book.Cons1. Heavy- Good or bad thing. For me I couldn't care less as I am just happy to be reading a physical book again (schools are really shifting towards poorly functioning, non-versatile, e-texts).2. Though not having to do directly with the book content, I did not expect a brand new book to come by any means. However, the vast majority of the book is thoroughly highlighted. Evidently the previous user reads through the tip of a highlighter, of a rainbow of colors whose designation I have yet to determine. Every...single....word is highlighted as you might imagine this took some getting used to as text would shift from neon green to neon yellow to dark blue to pink and on. I'll re-update if they try to charge me for the highlighting massacre.

The class I am taking supposedly requires the fourth edition of this book (according to our school bookstore website, that is). However, my professor told the class that the third and fourth editions are pretty much the same aside from some things like page and section numbering, and that we would be able to use either one for the class. If you are looking to save some money and still have basically the same book, then I would highly recommend this one. As far as how the book reads, it seems pretty good for a textbook. It isn't exactly fun to read, but it's relatively easy to follow and there are a lot of good pictures and diagrams. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, and would definitely recommend this book.

I used this older edition for my class that required the latest edition and I was perfectly fine. The information and images are basically the same- there is some differences in wording and order that the info is presented but overall it is the same as the latest edition. Also my professor used many of the images directly from the text on our exams and all of the ones that he used in the new edition were the same. Def. recommend getting this version- it will save you money and you will get the same as if you used the newer edition.

Cell bio is a dense and difficult subject. Most universities (and authors) assume you have the necessary background knowledge to understand this basic text. If you don't understand chemical bonds (or other basic chemistry concepts) and if you haven't had a solid intro to bio (for biology majors, not for non-majors) this book will be deceptively difficult for you to follow. As far as beginner's texts go, this one is just fine. In fact, after an undergraduate class in cell bio several years ago, I sold the book back (I seem to lose more good books this way) and immediately regretted it. I recently re-purchased it so that I could refer back to it as desired. The only negative about this book, this edition (other editions may have fixed the problem) is its seemingly fragile physical state: the hardcover is weak. It bends and bows, and the spine usually collapses (this is my second book and the spine pulled away from the pages just as it did with my first copy of this book). I am NOT hard on textbooks. I don't highlight or mark in them, I don't toss them around, I don't cram them in backpacks. This is just from gentle use. If not for the easily-ruined cover, I would have given this textbook five stars.

This book is what I call the annotated version of The Cell. It has the "essentials" with enough figures to help you understand the basics. I found that the descriptions of some of the concepts were lacking in the amount of detail I was expected to understand in my class. If this is a required book for your class, you should read through the chapters before class and write down a list of concepts not explained in detail that you can ask your professor to elaborate on so you don't spend hours researching literature online without a sense of direction in order to master the material.

I am getting my MPH, am a lawyer, and the work in class assumes a great deal of previous background in cell biology. This textbook, likely for undergrads, was just the ticket for catching up. Immensely helpful.

A phenomenal book that is great for any undergraduate (or even high school) student who wants to strengthen their conceptual understanding of biology. Easy read an explains everything in an undertstndable, universal way, even when going over the basics. You could honestly start your biology career by first reading this, despite it really being a book on cell biology.Really can't recommend this book enough, Finally made me understand the "why's" of biology instead of blind memorization. 5/5
