My son is a junior in high school. He's always been good at math but a combination of getting lazy and not wanting to put effort into his studies suddenly put him into a situation where he was getting a D in pre-cal. I made him bring his school book home every night, do whatever he learned in class along with homework over again the second time. Then I made him read the appropriate section in Pre-cal for Dummies and do the problems in this work book. In a month he is back to a solid B. I'm going to push him to get an A second semester. Math is important and for my son, a little extra effort and the For Dummies books made a difference between a D and a B.

I bought this book for my younger brother who was struggling with college course. He studied from it over the course of two weeks to prepare himself before taking the course, and he found it amazing! He said that the explanations in the books really cleared things up and he found himself learning more from his self study sessions than he did when he took the course the previous semester. I would definitely recommend this book if you want to learn and prep yourself for pre-calc.

I used this workbook over the summer, in preparation for my Pre-Calculus (MTH163) course this fall and it was a godsend! It's been a while since I've taken a college math course and I truly believe this was instrumental in my success this semester.

This book is a tour de force in comparative history. Essentially unexplored among the vast number of treatises on war have been the psychological and cultural sequelae emerging from defeat. The author identifies a sequence of societal structural changes following defeat of the Confederate States of America, the Second French Empire (of Napoleon III), and the German Empire (of Wilhelm II). First come shock and denial, then rejection and humiliation of the former leaders, who are held responsible for the debacle. The term "dreamland" describes this situation when the nation feels cathartically cleansed, free of guilt, and hopeful for a return to the status quo ante. There is usually strong identification with the victor and adoption of many of his ideas and practices. However, the defeated nation may deny responsibility for its own defeat, invoking a betrayal from within or a "stab in the back." Next follows a desire and planning for revenge or "revanche." Perhaps the most powerful message conveyed by Schivelbusch is this: The 50 years spanned by the three studies mark the final transition from more or less "civilized" notions of war and peace to the unlimited and unsparing pursuit of 20th Century war--a REBARBARIZATION of the world! In this process, economic forces (massive production) have taken precedence over the military. In his epilogue, Schivelbusch asks if America's post-September 11 war fever is the belated response (revanche) to defeat in Vietnam. Is the situation analogous to that of the Weimar republic? I am a systems theorist (consider my own writings), and I was delighted that Shivelbusch's analysis fits well into the systems framework.

Well written and an interesting take on the consequences of losing a war. The thing missing from my perspective is that the US hasn't really fought a declared war in a month of Sundays. Nor has it fought a war where the US itself was going to be overrun. I doubt it will be relevant to an American.

Historicizing the idea of a short, "purposeful" war come about during late nineteenth century cabinet diplomacy, Schivelbusch's Culture of Defeat demonstrates that war is never-ending- a plea, in effect, for world peace, and disarming criticism of the today's interventionist politics.

No one before really explained how defeat can create a culture of revenge and how this culture can play out into the future.

This is a a very right-brained, synthesizing effort rather than a narrative of any kind. I'm prepared to love that sort of thing, but in the end this book doesn't work for me.As to the central theme, the similarities between the South/French/Germans after their losses aren't that tightly marked off, so the whole book lacks focus. It almost comes off as three ninety-page books, and each book is a lot of four and five page riffs on various topics, many of them interesting in themselves and all more or less related. But ultimately I found the effect unsettling and unsatisfying.That's enough of a problem, but I also felt the story bumped along with an uneven mix of minutiae on the one hand and generalization on the other. I wonder what it would be like if I knew more about the time periods involved here: would I appreciate the writing better, or would I be even more annoyed by the author's glibness?That said, I now know that slavery would probably have died a natural death but for the spectacular rise of the cotton industry (that's pre-Civil War, but whatever); I learned about the Paris Commune and some of the grandiose pan-European idealizations of the French in the last part of the nineteenth century (starring Victor Hugo); and I discovered that Henry Ford was very popular in post WWI Germany, and how Americanized that nation was in the twenties, particularly Berlin.But there are probably better places to read about these things.

THE CULTURE OF DEFEAT, an appraisal of the sociocultural similarities apparent in the American South after the aftermath of the Civil War, France after the Franco Prussian War, and Germany after WWI, is an extraordinary performance. Much more than mere sociology or social psychology, it ranges with bracing erudition and insight across the realms of intellectual history, cultural criticism, and political and economic history, synthesizing across these disciplines to elucidate its main thesis: that these "losing sides" went through nearly the same stages of national consciousness as they sought to come back from defeat, that each put forth an explanation of their failure in similar terms, and each, in the fullness of time, came back as more powerful after their defeats.Dreamworld, scapegoating, revenge -- these are just a few of the parallel stages these defeated states went through. For instance, Germany, France, the American South, all cultivated a "dreamworld" in the immediate aftermath of their defeats, a period of time where leaders are blamed for misleading the people into a war that could not be won, a time when the defeated nation looks to the victors for recognition of their true goodness and their unfortunate victimization by a corrupt elite. In licking their wounds, new more powerful "us vs. them" discourses were created and served to bind the defeated together in seeking their redemption among nations. The Southernization of U.S. politics, for example, over the past 25 years is emblematic of how the South has indeed risen again. In the short term, it took only a few years (with the rise of the Ku Klux Klan as the enforcement arm of Southern elites) to rewrite the Reconstruction codes as Jim Crow laws and the "lawful" suppression of the African American to be de facto reinstituted against the early injunctions of the victor. As Schivelbusch points out, in a terrible irony, the Nazis looked to these codes for instruction as they planned the demonization and destruction of the Jews.Unlike Kubler-Ross' famous (and in danger of becoming as trite and omnipresent as the 12 step program) stages of grief, nation states do not apparently move toward acceptance. In the nation state new discourses must be hammered together out of the wreckage of defeat, and new goals and national purposes must be forged out of the ashes. One assumes it is difficult to mobilize a citizenry under the banner of acceptance. Schivelbusch, to this point, interestingly, takes issue with the notion that the cycle of defeat and revenge was broken at last after the Second World War through American munificence with Japan and Germany. Schivelbusch suggests that a form of revenge has indeed been in play in the economic arena.In his conclusion, Schivelbusch notes it is not much of a stretch to suggest that these same patterns may hold true in the wake of the current U.S. war and that a new, more virulent culture of defeat may be created in the Middle East. In less interesting and compelling fashion, other recent books suggest this has already come to pass. Importantly, what Schivelbusch does is show how Western states, too, use the same language of dreamworld and revenge, and shows how they have embarked on the same paths of retribution and domination.

This was a fantastic book. I'm not sure what drew me to it since I am not necessarily in a position where I give formal presentations very often and frankly have avoided using audiovisual aids in the presentations I have given. Prior to reading this book I couldn't have told you what an IPO was and I'm not in an industry where I'm likely to give presentations to investors or in a multimillion dollar industry.I have given presentations though and they haven't always gone the way I wanted them to. Now I know why. I've committed almost every one of the "cardinal sins" or presentation, with and without A/V assistance. After reading this book, I feel much better prepared should the need for a presentation arise. In fact, I'm almost hoping that a chance to put these principles into action presents itself.I could also see many applications for the same information in other aspects of my personal and professional life. We are all "selling", whether it be a product, an idea or concept, or a relationship. We want others to get it, to understand us, and really we want them to agree with us or take a desired action. The way that we communicate that is critically important to whether we achieve our goal. All of these corporation-tested techniques explained in this book have many useful applications in life if applied creatively.The author practiced what he preached, and the use of the techniques was evident in the way he crafted the text, diagrams, and captions. Since I was reading on an older Kindle, some of the formatting wasn't the best, but even with that said, the attention to detail and the use of great communication techniques was evident. I learned a lot - about presentations, about writing, about communication, and about myself.

This book was a game changes for me when it came to speaking. I've recommended it to countless people.Every time I feel my public speaking skills slipping, I remind myself to go back to the book. I actually just purchased it for the 3rd time (kindle edition so I don't need to drag around the hard cover).I don't consider myself a natural public speaker. But I'm boarding a plane to Sydney tonight (from California) to return to a conference where I was rated the top speaker last year. The key to improving my presenting skills was getting the content right. Jerry lays out a process for developing and organizing the content that makes it much easier to present with confidence. I've also attended Jerry's two day workshop. Because I had studied his books so much, I didn't get a whole lot extra from the workshop. So instead of spending thousands of dollars, you can get everything you need from this book.

I was interested in this book because I do speak in front of people on a regular basis (as a preacher, I am publicly speaking every week). I wanted to improve my presentation skills. The subject of presentations is specifically directed at the business world and not sermon or teaching. The main idea of a narrative presentation model is relevant. The method applies to any speaker who may need to improve their presentation in preparation, flow, and visual aspects.The book refers to older versions of PowerPoint presentation software, but they may still be in use.The suggestions and skills described are still useful and do not suffer from the older software references. This is useful for persons who need to improve their public speaking presentation efforts.

Presenting to Win reminds you of the basics: don't read the slides, make your slides interesting, etc. The point is to use your slides and other visual aids as exactly that: visual aids. If someone could know everything you're planning to say by reading your slides then they don't need to have you in the room, they can just read the slides. But Presenting to Win doesn't tell you not to impart information in your slides, instead it gives suggestions for how to jazz things up so that you can have a better chance of getting and keeping people's attention. There are specific, concrete recommendations that you can use to become a better presenter. Note also that as a Kindle book you don't lose too much in the translation, so you can feel comfortable downloading this and not worry that you'll be missing visuals that the Kindle can't properly display.

Getting your story right is the key to presenting well and the writer takes you through steps to do this. Admittedly, I wanted more time on the topic and more examples. This is as close as I’ll likely get to attending his workshop, and there’s plenty to implement here! I highly recommend this book for those who want to improve their presentations.

I've been making business presentations for close to 18 years. Upon reading this book, I discovered there is a much better way. I learned more about developing and delivering presentations from this book than I had in my entire career. This book is extremely insightful and prescriptive. Jerry walks you through it step-by-step. I was able to apply what I learned right away to an upcoming presentation, and had tremendous success. I could see the difference right away. This book guides the way our entire organization develops and delivers its presentations. Highly recommended.

This is an outstanding book on the subject of presentation excellence. Jerry Weissman offers real-world experience on the value of effective presentations and their impact on business results. I love his thinking on the 16 flow structures. I have underlined more passages in his book than most other presentation books. Practical, strategic, useful. You need to read this book!

It should be made clear that this book is geared towards synthetic (particularly organic) chemists. As such, much of the information in this book like drying agents, cleaning mixtures, cooling baths, silica/alumina chromatography are still very much applicable for the practicing synthetic chemist. Other highlights of this book include a good section on spectroscopy (IR frequencies, NMR shifts and coupling constants) as well as atomic and molecular properties (like bond lengths, pKa's, etc.)That said, this book is old. One of the charts includes a melting point for the "polywater" "discovered" by Soviet scientists in the 70s, which has since become a textbook example of pathological science. It would be nice for this book to be updated.

I bought this book several years ago, when I was still a lab tech. Now that I have my own lab and do my own research. I still have this very valuable tome by my side. The NMR data and the other Spectroscopy and Chromatography data is not to be found anywhere else. Very valuable little book.We use it quite frequently in the lab along with the CRC manuals and Lange's handbook of Chemistry.I would not trade this for the world.

Apparently the edition I ordered is from the 1960's... that wasn't clearly stated in the description, or maybe I just missed it, but 1960's information has VERY limited utility for me. Not to mention the entire thing appears to have been typed with a typewriter, with no graphics whatsoever, so in addition to being useless it's also ugly. If you want this book MAKE SURE TO CHECK THAT IT'S A NEWER EDITION or you will be sorry.

I bought this for my niece for Christmas. I was sincerely surprised when I received a thank you note from her! You know we just don't do that any more. And this was not prompted by her parents. Here is what she said:"Thank you for my cool book! I love it because it has Japanese sumo wrestlers in it! It is cool too! Can you buy me another one?!! Please! Please! I beg you! If you don't I shall die!"LOL I'd say thats a 5 star book! :)

Readable for 6 years old. We use this to travel around the world every night where she can pretend to be at different countries. We are booking our trip to Thailand with our 4 and 6 years old in tow.

About the Author

Count Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was born in central Russia. After serving in the Crimean War, he retired to his estate and devoted himself to writing, farming, and raising his large family. His novels and outspoken social polemics brought him world fame.Richard Pevear has published translations of Alain, Yves Bonnefoy, Alberto Savinio, Pavel Florensky, and Henri Volohonsky, as well as two books of poetry. He has received fellowships or grants for translation from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the French Ministry of Culture. Larissa Volokhonsky was born in Leningrad. She has translated works by the prominent Orthodox theologians Alexander Schmemann and John Meyendorff into Russian. Together, Pevear and Volokhonsky have translated Dead Souls and The Collected Stories by Nikolai Gogol, The Complete Short Novels of Chekhov, and The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment, Notes from Underground, Demons, The Idiot, and The Adolescent by Fyodor Dostoevsky. They were twice awarded the PEN Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize (for their version of Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and for Tolstoy's Anna Karenina), and their translation of Dostoevsky's Demons was one of three nominees for the same prize. I have, at various times, tried to read four different editions of War & Peace (Penguin, Signet, Barnes & Noble, and now this) and by far, this is the best edition I've seen. This edition is everything I was looking for in a copy of War & Peace and I cannot recommend it highly enough.Pros:It is highly readable. Translating texts is always difficult, because you want to retain the feel of reading a Nineteenth century work but use language that makes the work accessible. Personally, I found some editions (Barnes & Noble, Penguin) to be hard to read and comprehend, especially when you first begin. This edition is a relative breeze to read.It has French translations. When reading the Signet edition, I found myself using google translate to understand sentences or phrases left in the book in French. Other editions translated most of the French but left phrases here and there untranslated and in the text, without footnotes. I understand in the original, Tolstoy wrote entire passages in French but provided translations in the foot notes. This edition follows that pattern. There are entire passages in French, but they are translated in the footnotes on the page.It has historical end-notes and an index. I am not unfamiliar with European and Russian history, but I, like most people, have no more knowledge than what I learned in my freshman world history class. This work has end notes in the text to provide context. Though it slows me down, I find myself flipping to the back of the book and reading every end note when the text provides it. I cannot stress enough how helpful this has been. The index is likewise helpful. It is an alphabetical list and short biography of the historical characters and places mentioned in War and Peace.It includes a short chapter summary. At the very end of the book, there is a chapter summary for a collection of chapters sharing a theme or describing the same event. The summary is no more than a sentence long and provides a nice refresher when you are trying to recall what happened when.Cons:Compared to editions that translate all the French, reading in the footnotes can be burdensome. I personally don't mind, but I can see how that might trip some people up.If you are looking for a copy of War and Peace, this is the one to get. Trust me.

It is unlikely that anyone who has the endurance to finish this book would give it a poor review. That would still be true, however, if it were one-third the length. It is, if not the best novel ever written, certainly on a very short list of great works of literature.The beauty of the prose, for me, is the fact that Tolstoy speaks through subtlety. His powers of description are beyond comparison, and in fact there is relatively little dialogue given the length of the book. But the focus of his descriptive powers is not the scenery or the landscape, as is often the case, but the gesture, the look on the face, the social context of the event. This is a subtlety that is lost in our dialogue-heavy, action-packed world today, and is almost foreign to most contemporary authors.Which, in part, also explains why War and Peace seems inapproachable to many contemporary readers. Many of us have lost touch with subtlety and if you are one of those, reading this book would be the greatest gift you can give yourself in the months ahead.“Helene was so good-looking that there was not only not a trace of coquetry to be seen in her, but, on the contrary, it was as if she was embarrassed by her unquestionable and all too strongly and triumphantly effective beauty. It was as if she wished but was unable to diminish the effect of her beauty.” When was the last time you read such a descriptive passage that used so few descriptive adjectives?One of the common criticisms of the book is that the characters often speak in French, which is retained in this translation. This is more true in the beginning, however, and, in total, the French represents a small portion of the total prose. And translation is provided, although the electronic version requires a certain amount of digital (as in fingers) dexterity that I don’t seem to have.Tolstoy, however, is sensitive to the inconvenience and I can’t recall a single passage in which the French was central to either the theme or the storyline. It is mostly there for context, so even if you pass over the short phrases you will miss little other than the full experience that Tolstoy intended. Also remember that French and English are not all that foreign to each other and the most important words in French can be easily guessed by English readers with a little lingual abandonment.Similarly, the complexity of Russian naming conventions need not be the burden it often is to the English reader. Tolstoy most definitely wrote a novel, not a mystery thriller, although he claims that it is not a novel. The storyline is not the book; it serves the theme. That, along with the rich context provided by Tolstoy’s prose, means that you don’t have to recognize each name before you complete the sentence. Nine times out of ten the identity will become obvious before the scene ends. And for that exception there is a handy reference guide. My advice: when you encounter a name that you don’t immediately recognize, read on for a bit before you look it up.As a thematic novel, it is not Tolstoy’s intent to document the Napoleonic wars, although that is the rough timeline of the book. He uses the history more to reveal the cultural themes he seeks to reveal—the culture of the Russian aristocracy at the time.While that culture contrasts sharply with the way in which most Americans are inclined to think of Russia, the themes are quite timeless. There are many passages which could as easily be describing today’s aristocracy—the wealthy elite. As Yogi Berra reminded us, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”Tolstoy is particularly philosophical about war. When I asked a friend of mine who was a Marine veteran who served in the jungles of Vietnam what he thought about the movie, “Saving Private Ryan”, he noted that no one has ever been able to capture the sheer chaos of war on film. Tolstoy, however, does capture it in prose and it is moving without being graphic or overly detailed. You nonetheless feel that you are immersed in the same situational context as the young infantryman thrown about in the chaos of futility and death.In the end, this book easily earns its reputation as one of the best novels ever written. Through his grasp of subtlety and his incomparable ability to build intangible impressions with tangible prose, Tolstoy takes us through the full range of human emotions, accomplishment, and vacuity.Unlike most contemporary authors, Tolstoy actually “tells” us little. As many great novels do, he merely puts themes out there for us to consider and mold to our own experience and our own lives. An Artists' Retreat Full of Magic and RomanceThis set contains three complete, distinct, yet intertwined stories. All take place at an artists’ retreat that has been created in a castle-like building on an island off the coast of New England. In the first story, the half-vampire owner of the establishment becomes entranced with one of the young poets there. The second book is a story about two of the retreat’s artists who fall for each other. The final book has the human caretaker of the retreat falling for one of the magical artists.This set of books is very steamy. The author is very good about building sensual tension in these stories. A lot of play happens, drawn-out seductions occur, fears and concerns are acknowledged and addressed before complete fulfillment.There were the common issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage that are all too typical in today’s books. But this didn't take away from the paranormal, erotic, and romantic fun of the books.I received a free advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Gargoyles, vampires and wolf shifters, oh my! Come to the remote artist's colony off the coast of Massachusetts called Les Beaux Arts at the Chateau DeRoche. There are many artists in residence at the Chateau. Come meet them.This three book set is a great introduction to Lisa Carlisle's intriguing world of gargoyles, humans, vampires and wolf shifters. All three novels are centered around the island and Chateau residents.These are page turning novels that keep you reading and guessing what will happen next. Romance and suspense. I recommend that you start with this box set and move right on to her others books. Most notably Highland Gargoyles or my favorite: Ungerground Encounters.

This box set is a terrific way to get three wonderful reads at once. These PNR books offer a variety of characters including vampires, gargoyle shifters, humans and wolf shifters. The books are well written and contain engaging plots that snag and hold your attention. The characters and the settings are very detailed. This makes it very easy to visualize and connect with the characters and story line. Features plenty of drama, danger intensity, emotions and heat! A great box set for PNR fans or just a fan of sweeping romances. By my own choosing I am posting a candid review.

This is an amazing box set of three seductive Gothic tales that will draw you in from the first page. Set at an art colony on a small island, in a castle by the ocean are three hot, vibrant, page-turner stories of DARK VELVET —a vampire romance, DARK MUSE—a gargoyle shifter romance, and DARK STRANGER—a wolf shifter romance. The writing is intriguing and fresh, and the characters are well fleshed out. You'll love this one. I highly recommend the box set, Dark Desires.

Another boxed set of vamp-a-licious, smoking hot must reads by Ms. Carlisle, with modern day vamps, gargoyles and other shifters! *Warning* Must turn your A/C on full blast, wear gloves and have a fire extinguisher handy! ;) ... "Dark Desires" has 3 fantastic page-turners in some of the best contemporary PNR fiction around! I was grabbed from the get-go as always by these unique plots, well-defined characters, amazing descriptions & twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat! Even tho I always volunteer to read this author’s books in advance, I also buy many whenever I can so these are my honest feelings without any outside influences. I highly recommend this whole series to 18+ Adult fans of fiction & especially those who love paranormal and fantasy like I do! I can’t wait for more, but I will ;)

A vampire, a gargoyle, and a wolf all for your reading pleasure. They were great stories. I actually read the vampire one twice right away. The others were just as good. The characters were wonderful, and addicting. I loved the settings, and could picture everything in my minds eye. I need more in this world. It was great.

Antoine, Savannah, Dante, Gina, Cameron and Nadya will keep you turning pages in this romantic suspense about taking chances. Characters are very interesting in so many different ways.
