Arabia Felix: The Danish Expedition of 1761-1767 (NYRB Classics), by Thorkild Hansen

Review

"This tale of an 18th century scientific expedition gone awry (first published in Danish in 1962 and back out in a new English edition) is a brutal, beautiful story of human ideals – and all the clever ways we manage to muck them up. Part history, part fiction, part travelogue, this book balances its central tragedy with some winks and smirks. And yes, it's true: Before long, I found those pages practically turned themselves." —Colin Dwyer, NPR Book Concierge, "2017's Great Reads"“First and foremost, Arabia Felix is just a terrific story: riveting, hilarious, exquisitely written and translated. Beyond that, however, it draws a rich and dynamic group portrait of a collection of philosopher-scientist-explorers at the very dawn of the modern era.” —Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of A Sense of Direction"The material that Thorkild Hansen has gathered for this book is as dramatic and colorful as anything....Arabia Felix is a first-class job.... Hansen has rescued from oblivion a fine story of adventure, discovery, death and endurance.... He has written a shrewd study of human character under severe stress." —Orville Prescott, The New York Times"An epic voyage...unflaggingly readable and interesting." —Don Moraes, The Spectator "A blend of historical chronicle and biography...Hansen’s absorbing chronicle of this expedition and its complicated background dramas is a splendid narrative told with literary distinction." —Edmund Fuller, The Wall Street Journal"Thorkild Hansen...has written this so well that the reader is caught up in the problems of the expedition and travels with them slowly, sometimes dangerously as well as painfully.... This book reaffirms one’s faith in the ability of the human being as an observer with minimum equipment...fascinating to the general reader." —Lorrin Kennamer, Austin American-Statesman"A scholarly and exciting account...an admirable writer, whose narrative energies [are] clear and dynamic...he tells it simply and well. Arabia Felix must appeal to anyone who enjoys reading of adventure and exploration." —Michael Adams, The Guardian

I found this book interesting and informative, an enjoyable book to sink into. An incredible journey to Yemen by amazing men. It totally changed my image of the country that was then called Arabia Felix. The beautiful illustrations added to the enjoyment..

The historical period that is commonly known under the name Enlightenment Age was dominated by ideas centered on reason as the primary source of authority and legitimacy. Such approach to the world resulted in new views on many very known things and well-established ideas that opened the road to the rapid development of modern science as well as new political ideas. The main motto of this special epoch could be expressed by the following Latin phrase ''Sapere aude'', which means "Dare to know" or ''Dare to be wise''. Many new political or social ideas that are originated from this historical epoch were definitely not very wise, what was explicitly shown by the madness of the French Revolution, which was conducted by the followers of these ideas, who unfortunately disconnected with the reality. Curiosity driven expeditions to the different lands were organized by different influential people in order to verify, commonly spread opinions and to extend general knowledge about the world around. One of such expeditions to the land called ''Arabia Felix'' was organized by the Danish king Frederik V, who enjoyed a company of beautiful women and wine as well as he enjoyed a good reputation as a patron of arts. This particular expedition to the Arabian Peninsula (1761 - 1767) had a purely scientific character and purely scientific goals were defined for its carefully selected members. It was full of dramatic events resulting in very high death rate of the expedition's participants and in the accumulation of the very versatile scientific materials that have changed the European perception of the Arabian Peninsula. The Danish journalist and traveler Thorkild Hansen (1927 - 1989) wrote a compelling book about this expedition, which he entitled ''Arabia Felix''.The story of an expedition of six different people can be regarded as a perfect study of human characters and weaknesses with an particular emphasis on people who devoted their lives for exploring ''caves of wisdom'' and thanks to this exploration extending human knowledge on the world that surrounds us. Author of this particular book analyzes in detail the motivation of each expedition members that was behind their participation in this very risky venture. Motivation these people had was really different for each of them what the main reason of conflicts that existed between them since the very beginning of their journey to the mysterious Arabia Felix. Despite the fact that Mr. Hansen has his own opinions about the expedition members he presents their characteristics in such a way that on the basis of the provided set of information the reader can have own unbiased opinion on the six main characters of this book. This is a very strong point of this work. Below I mention two members of this expedition, who were the most productive in terms of results that extended our knowledge and understanding of the world.Peter Forsskal - A naturalist and a student of a great scholar Carl von Linne, was a very gifted and scrupulous scientists, but also an owner of a very difficult character that one could call him ''big head''. His work had a very huge impact on our knowledge on plants and animals of the Middle Eastern region he visited, because in his detailed works he described many species of animals he encountered during his journey. As mentioned previously he had a difficult way of being and he was a extremely stubborn political idealist, who was talking loudly about the equality of all people, but he himself respected only persons with the same or higher scientific title as him.Carsten Niebuhr - The only survivor of this largely forgotten scientific expedition, who was the only real empiricist in the group, who was able to observe the world around and make proper conclusions from his observation, what allowed him to survive and eventually return to Copenhagen. He should be also praised for his contribution to the Assyriology as a scientific discipline, which was at his times still to be born due to his tremendous work and efforts he made with a great dedication while his stay among the ruins of the Palace of Persepolis and surroundings. Moreover it is worth mentioning that he copied the famous Behistun Inscription with very high veracity and accuracy, what later open a path for others decipher a cuneiform script. This book offers a detailed and very sincere description of the origin, organization and realization of the scientific project. All problems connected with it, like permanent questing for funding and many others are very lucidly presented on the pages of this work. Despite the fact that depicted expedition took place so many years ago the information about scientists, their problems and their world, presented in this book is still valid.

A fascinating view of a lost period. One of the expedition members might be known today as one of the eighteenth century's greatest naturalists had he not died on this expedition.

Fascinating.

This is a great book about an interesting and neglected (at least in English language writing) historical figure, Carsten Neighbor, and what was really the first serious European scientific expedition to the Arabian peninsula.

A somewhat dense but fascinating historical read that constantly reminds us how much the human world has changed in the last few-hundred years.

Absolutely fascinating...

I like the matter-of-fact chronology. It's rare, nowadays, to read a chronicle which is not packed with superlatives (rather like Donald Trump describing everything/everyone as either being 'great' or 'horrible') Hansen embodies that Nordic tradition of 'telling it like it is.' Refreshing. I too am a world traveler to out-of-the-way places (I go through a passport in 20 months), and somewhat can relate to the surprises/challenges of traveling off the beaten track. Yemen today is wracked by civil (uncivil) war, but the book shows how it, and parts of the Middle East, were before modernity tarnished it.

This itty-bitty book may or may not be helpful, but I'm going to need a magnifying glass to read it. It's ridiculously small at roughly 3" x 5". I'd return it, but it's not worth the trouble. Yeah, the phrases you need are there, but who can read it.

I used this guide to help me prepare for my trip to Marrakech and it was super handy. I only learned about 5 words really well, but I knew them so well, when I met people, they thought I was a native or I was an american that had previously lived in Morocco for an extended period of time. Definitely a wise purchase.

This is a very handy pocket guide, well worth the money with simple phrases and great tips. It easily fits in your purse or pocket which was a bonus as well!

I read this on my Kindle before and while traveling in Morocco. Great help with the languages spoken in Morocco.

This is a great way to learn Moroccan Arabic also called Darija! I have been enjoying learning along with Tamazight (Berber), and Professional Arabic. Yep there are three languages along with French, and Spanish mixed in.

From Publishers Weekly

Brown's (Uncommon Traveler) lyrical narrative chronicles the life of Columcille, born to an Irish king in 521, and his passionate commitment to words and ideas. Though he grew up during the Dark Ages, when the new rulers of Ireland had virtually extinguished education ("Reading and writing were like magic, and the people who knew their secrets as rare as wizards"), Columcille from early childhood loved writing, which he mastered as a student in a monastery. He went on to become a monk as well as a skilled scribe and poet, and founded many monasteries. Brown laces historical facts with anecdotes from legends in his portrayal of this remarkable man, who exiled himself from his homeland after his kinsmen crushed the army of a High King, in defense of a manuscript. Columcille had painstakingly hand-lettered a Psalter (book of Psalms) and the king had ruled that the copy belonged to the owner of the original manuscript. In penitence for the bloodshed, Columcille decided to exile himself from his homeland, and ended up on the Scottish island of Iona, and there founded a monastery. He and the other resident scribes there devoted themselves to transcribing manuscripts, creating books that were then "dispatched, like small boats on a dark and wild sea, to places where reading and writing had been forgotten or ignored." Like the work of his subject, Brown's account also sheds light on an intriguing individual of extraordinary accomplishment. The author's signature stark, muted watercolors seem especially well suited to this hero's life of piety and his historical setting. Ages 5-9. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-A lyrical picture-book biography of Columcille, or St. Columba, an Irish monk of the sixth century. In an age in which books were a rarity and few people were literate, Columcille was "Prince, scribe, monk, [and] bard." Brown describes his subject's fascination with a rare book of Bible psalms and his secret vow to make an illegal copy. The High King declared that the duplicate manuscript was the property of the owner of the original, and a terrible battle ensued. Although Columcille's army won, the horror of the bloodshed that day caused him to vow to leave Ireland and cross the sea to Scotland. On the island of Iona, he and 12 followers established a monastery and set to work copying other books and illuminated manuscripts. This brief but fascinating story will appeal to bibliophiles and be useful for assignments on European saints and Celtic history. There is a helpful author's note, a sample Roman alphabet, and detailed sketches of bookmaking and a leather boat. The illustrations are soft double-page watercolors that create an impression of green countryside, wild waves, and the windswept shoreline. This is a lovely, intriguing book for special readers.Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NYCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I got this book for my 1st and 2nd grade religious ed/First Holy Communion kids.At first, I was taken aback. The colors are kind of dark and rainy. It also focuses on Columcille (St Columba's - mid to late 500's A.D.) fight over a book that he had copied (i.e., a handwritten manuscript) that ended up in a clan war and a number of wounded and dead. However, after reading it a few times, I realized it was a really interesting approach to looking at sin and weakness. Columcille was given the death penalty by his bishop, but was given a reprieve through the support of another monk. Instead of doing something useless or dumb, Columcille exiled himself to nearby Scotland and ended up doing fabulous work, spreading Christianity, founding monasteries and churches, and functioning as a peacemaker among the Picts.I found that the kids really liked the story and were captivated by the illustrations.

Great book and inspiring. A good saint book to add to your collection. Easy to read and for the kids to understand.

"Columcille was born in 521. He was the son of a king, from a corner of Ireland scrubbed hard by ocean winds, in a time that came to be known as the dark ages..." So begins Don Brown's marvelous picture book biography of the scribe and monk, known now as Saint Columba. Brown traces the Celtic legend of this remarkable man who desperately wanted to bring learning and books back into the world after much was lost with the fall of the Roman Empire. After a bloody war was waged over the copying and ownership of a special book of psalms, Columcille left Ireland forever and with twelve followers "set sail on a dark and wild sea." Landing on the tiny Scottish island of Iona, he and his followers built a monastery and scriptorium where books were copied and scribes were trained. "Books were made and dispatched, like small boats on a dark and wild sea, to places where reading and writing had been forgotten or ignored. The books made colonies of learning, and people's minds, once dark with ignorance, were brightened." Mr Brown's poetic text is filled with imagery, is rich in history and drama and complemented by powerful and evocative artwork in quiet and subdued tones. Together word and art bring Columcille's inspiring story to life with passion and respect. Perfect for youngsters 8 and older, or as a read aloud for younger children, Across A Dark And Wild Sea includes an Author's Note to enhance and complete the story, the Unical alphabet used by scribes, and a bibliography. This is a rare and wonderful story celebrating books and learning, that shouldn't be missed. "Columcille, the man who loved books, helped the world love books. So we remember him and retell his story."

This is a nicely illustrated and written story about Ireland's Columcille, but the author left one very important point out--Columcille was a monk! That's right, a Christian leader in ancient Ireland. To read this book, one would only know he was a scholar & lover of books, but his claim to fame was as a religious man.

The only thing that I can add to the professional and reader reviews is that St. Columcille is also known as St. Columba. All the other reviews do a great job of describing this book.

This book was read as part of the Catholic Mosaic program with our kids. It happened to be read around the first week of school and the subject of being a scholar and how important books are to EVERYONE was highly appropriate. Definitely a keeper!

The storm-tossed watercolors on the pages of this book are the perfect illustrations for this biography.Columcille the man was a monk who fought to maintain the written word during the Dark Ages. This biography is quite well done, with a very good notes section at the back. Includes a bibliography and a demonstration of how to create Uncial calligraphy script.Great book.
