Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better. ―ALBERT CAMUS In 1988, I was infected with a virus that didn’t even have a name, let alone a treatment. It has since been labeled chronic hepatitis C virus, or HCV. As a nurse working with HCV patients, for many years, I had little to offer but hope for better HCV treatment, as success rates were so low. Now, that hope is a reality. It is true that HCV therapy does not cure everyone 100 percent of the time, but the odds of beating the disease are excellent and improving. Those patients who don’t permanently eliminate HCV still reap health benefits that are usually worth the investment. At this time, I believe that there is more to lose by not trying treatment than by giving it a shot. I know, it’s easier said than done. After reading the list of side effects associated with HCV drugs, my first reaction was that it would be better to take my chances with the disease rather than attempt therapy. It did not occur to me that HCV treatment might not be as bad as I had heard or imagined. Choosing between living with HCV and going through treatment can seem like being wedged between a rock and a hard place. But what if the hard place is not as hard as you think it might be? Or what if it is hard but temporary and quite bearable? I have learned firsthand that ordinary people, despite their fears and reservations, can successfully complete HCV treatment. I have witnessed many patients finish it. Some were so afraid that it took them years to make up their minds before agreeing to the protocol. Their strength inspired me to try HCV therapy for myself; their experiences showed me the easiest way through it; their stories moved me to share this message of hope. MY STORY When I was thirty-five, a blood transfusion both saved and forever altered my life. At the time, medical science was well aware of viruses such as HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), hepatitis A, and hepatitis B, as well as other microorganisms that had previously threatened the safety of transfusions, so the blood supply was thought to be safe. No one knew that there was another virus flourishing in the United States and around the world, and thus, in the blood supply. Two months after my blood transfusion, I felt severely fatigued. Laboratory tests showed liver problems. After a liver biopsy, I was diagnosed with non-A, non-B hepatitis. A year later, science isolated the virus and named it hepatitis C, or HCV. After a while, the exhaustion eased, so I thought my body had recovered from HCV on its own. I had no idea that the illness was taking up permanent residence in my system, multiplying and slowly destroying my liver. Although the initial relentless fatigue improved, it never completely vanished. I knew the virus hadn’t left my body. Tired of being tired all the time, I consulted a liver specialist. It was 1997, and treatment for HCV was relatively new, consisting of a single medication called interferon alfa. The probability of responding to the drug was extremely low, but I didn’t let the odds stand in my way. I figured that the medication worked for some patients, why couldn’t it work for me? For three months, I waded through treatment, stopping after the virus did not budge. By 2003, HCV treatment consisted of pegylated interferon incombination with ribavirin. Success rates were much higher, the drugs were easier to tolerate, and the medical community knew significantly more about good side effect management. Therapy was much easier the second time. There were no side effects during the first couple of weeks, and when they showed up, they were gradual and tolerable. My appetite diminished and I lost some weight, which I needed to lose anyway. At times, I was grouchy and depressed. Sometimes my brain felt like gelatin―a condition that patients call “brain fog.” (I couldn’t find where I parked car a few times, and I ran out of gas once. On another occasion, I couldn’t understand why my car keys wouldn’t fit into the ignition, only to discover that I was trying to start someone else’s car, which wasn’t even the same make or color as mine!) Normally active, I spent evenings on the sofa, becoming all too acquainted with television. Occasionally, I had insomnia, but rather than toss and turn, I found comfort in reruns of I Love Lucy and Barney Miller. Sometimes treatment was so easy, sometimes it was difficult, but it was always tolerable. And after three months, my HCV was undetectable, which encouraged me to stick it out. The laundry got done, the bills paid, and occasional crises were handled. I assure you, I am not superhuman. If I was able to deal with the side effects of HCV treatment and complete therapy, so can you. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS BOOK Free from Hepatitis C is designed to give you more than just hope. It presents practical information that will empower you to make solid choices about your health and provides tools that can help you through HCV treatment. Ultimately, it shows you how to build a solid foundation for therapy, which is the key to its success. Chapter 1 begins by outlining the basics of HCV. It explains how the disease is transmitted and diagnosed, and relates the history of HCV treatment. It describes the disease’s symptoms, its effects on the body, and its risk factors. Finally, it discusses how to build a good medical team, as well as how to reduce the chance of spreading the illness to others. Chapter 2 examines HCV treatment in detail, letting you know what to expect, why you should consider undergoing therapy, and the circumstances under which treatment is not recommended. It lists the drugs you might take, their side effects, as well as the odds of beating the virus permanently.

I have the book and the kindle app and for ANYONE with hepatitis c this is what you want and need to read. I am a support group leader and I reccomend nLucinda is down to earth and dead on target. This book will enrich you in many ways, sorry about my spelling. She has been a tremendous force in the battle against this "silent killer". I am hep c positive 3 rounds of treatment and still have hep c and yet with Lucinda, you can find hope for a better tomorrow.I know this book and kindle app will help as many as much as its helped me.

I just had a family member diagnosed with Hepatitis C and I immediately went online and ordered 3 copies of this book. One I kept and the other two I mailed to his immediate family members. I think that this is a very clearly written book, especially because it was written by not only someone who has Hepatitis C but who also happens to be an R.N.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who has been diagnosed with this disease, as well as their friends, family and others who will be involved in their treatment.Ms. Porter's book is very informative, easy to read and understand. It covers all the bases of hepatitis c , its treatment and side effects. She addresses every aspect including physical, emotional and social.I will be starting triple therapy treatment in a few weeks and I will keep this book close at hand, it is a must have.Thank you Ms. Porter for all of your research and hard work, I am sure that you and your books have helped many, many people to deal with this terrible disease.Jeff

Given as a gift to someone who thought it was okay. Information about it was good, he said, but could not utilize all of the information in the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone, whether a patient, spouse,or anyone who wants to be educated on treatment for Hepatitis C. My husband has just completed three weeks of Triple Therapy treatment. I took this book along to our first three appointments and referred back to chapters that I had questions about. I felt much more prepared for the appointments and not so overwhelmed by the information given verbally during a short appointment. The author has written this book with such a positive and hopeful approach to treatment. As we go through these next months of treatment, I will continue to refer back to this book. A must read for anyone that has been affected by this virus.

helpful for my brother

Good info, thou the drug treatment is dated.

This was by bible during my treatment. Lucinda wrote with passion, knowledge and compassion. I brought this book to my doctor visits too!

#21,300 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

A YA Superhero (or rather, Supervillain) Dystopian Fantasy that maintains a skillful blend of character and action.BOOK DETAILS:Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson, read by MacLeod Andrews, published by Audible Studios (2013) / Length: 12 hrs 14 minSERIES INFO:This is Book #1 in the "Reckoners Trilogy." All 3 books and a novella (#1.5) are available in audio.SUMMARY:This book is a bit more action oriented than my usual read. (Yes, I am one of those people who actually skip or fast-forward the fighting, car chases etc. To me, those are the boring parts; I'd rather read about the characters.) Thankfully a lot of the action is very character based, which is good.CHARACTERS:David: An adorkable "nerd" (just don't call him that to his face). Totally obsessed, he spends all his free time plotting to take down Steelheart. One of his biggest strengths is his ability to think on his feet and act quickly (although this "improvising" drives Megan crazy). His complete hopelessness with metaphors is cute, but does occasionally get a bit tiresome after 3 books.Megan: The newest and youngest member of the Reckoner team that David runs into. Hypercompetent, smart, slightly older, very attractive, and blows hot & cold. She sort of reminds me of a typical YA hero.David & Megan: This is a case of love at first sight (on his part) that doesn't annoy me. He is immediately attracted to her physically (not surprising, since she is dressed to seduce at the time), but it her competence at kicking-butt that seals the crush. "I respected her for that. Sparks, I was liking her more and more. And though she hadn’t been particularly affectionate toward me lately, she wasn’t openly hostile and cold any longer. That left me room to work some seductive magic. I wished I knew some."This is one romance that I was really pulling for.The Prof = cranky founder of the Reckoners, the only one as as obsessed as DavidTia = the brains, and the one who holds them all together when everything is falling apartAbraham = the wise man of faith, who always seems to have the best gun (and he's not French, you slontze, he's Canadian).Cody = the comic relief whose sense of humor just didn't click with me (I'm not fond of people who can't be serious)WORLDBUILDING:The post-apocalyptic Chicago cityscape is introduced well as David races through it at the beginning. It is a city where the sun hasn't shone for nearly 10 years and where most people live in a steel catacomb dug out below the transformed city. It is a place where anyone can be killed at any time for no reason. And yet, it is an oasis of civilization in the "Fractured States," since it has power and some sort of order. The Epics (Supers) each have 1 or more abilities of various strengths. And each has a single weakness that negates their ability, and may be quite bizarre.PLOT:I LOVE the first line. “I’ve seen Steelheart bleed.”We then get a great prologue that give us the history of how the world came to be the way it is (I always prefer to know, rather than be strung along and doled out bits & pieces), and of why David hates Steelheart. Followed by: “I’ve seen Steelheart bleed. And I will see him bleed again.”This is a trilogy, so the world's problems aren't resolved by the end. Plus, there are some fairly sharp twists that leave plot points dangling. But I found the end to be satisfying.Note: Sanderson is very skillful at foreshadowing without making the twists too easy to guess. I love going back and finding all the places that was done.HIGHLIGHTS / CAUTIONS:--I like how, despite it's comic book origins & plot to take down the villain, the book doesn't ignore the implications and possible consequences of their actions. David recognizes that what they are doing is the equivalent of terrorism (and that all terrorists feel justified). He is also forced to consider what will happen in the resulting power vacuum if they succeed.--I also like how, when meeting his heroes, he is forced to recognize that they are regular people with strengths & weaknesses.CAUTIONS(?): This book contains some intense scenes of violence, including the death of at least one child.NARRATION:The narrator is skilled and gives each character their own voice. Accents are well done. David's personality shines. / I listened on 1.25 speed (my usual).

I'm a big fan of Sanderson's other work including Mistborn and the Stormlight Archive. After reading the subject matter of this book, and expecting big things, I dove in. What I found was an original, and entertaining, but somehow different experience. To this book's credit, I've never heard of a story quite like this one, and it was certainly entertaining. What surprised me though we're the author's choices of writing style and plot devices. This book is told in an autobiographical first person perspective, from a self effacing protagonist whose choice of words often left me cringing, but who was otherwise supernatural lucky. As strange as it may seem, the main character from Steelheart just didn't feel as real as Vin, or Kaladin, or other characters from Sanderson's writings who actually HAD powers of their own. When I purchased this book, I was so convinced I would love it, I also bought the second Reckoners book at the same time. I will read it and may return to revise my current review if the story progresses and continues to surprise me, but for now having read more current examples of Sanderson's excellent authorship and having unrealistically high expectations of this series worked against me enjoying it. For now, I unfortunately would not recommend this series to fans of Mistborn or Stormlight as it is so fundamentally different. I would however recommend it to any fan of super heroes, vengeance stories, or affable and quirky protagonists.

How do you kill someone who can't be killed? The 'Epics' came to being. Though endowed with superpowers, they were anything but heroes.David Charleston lost his father at the hands of the mightiest of them all, Steelheart, as a boy. Watching and studying the Epics for the last ten years, he's figured out each has a weakness. He just needs the help of the Reckoners to enact his revenge. The day Calamity appeared in the sky the world changed. Or rather, it seemed to have caused some people to change and not for the better. As the saying goes: "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."Could any of us resist using newfound superhuman abilities for personal gain? What I liked:Steelheart is a wonderful spin on human nature. Could any of us honestly say we wouldn't be tempted to use newfound superhuman abilities for personal gain? Wealth? Status? Vengeance? We grow through struggle. But how would we improve if we were suddenly endowed with god-like power? Would we even want to? Or is power too seductive? What I didn't like:Nothing.

The book I truly love. A friend owns a copy and I wanted my own. HOWEVER, the packaging was torn to the point I was afraid the book had been damaged. The paper had a stamp on it indicating it contained "media" and could be opened for inspection. Since when do books get examined? I have ordered many many books and had never seen the stamp before or had one so severely damaged. The book itself is still awesome. There are many hidden waterfalls that don't get the publicity so we don't hear of them. For those not from the area or who are not real hikers, the rating system is excellent so you will know what you are in for. Enjoy NC waterfalls!

This is a good book, covering some falls that aren't mentioned in other guides of NC waterfalls. Each falls discussed has a photo. The quality of the paper is very nice and the photos are of very good quality. Overall a nice book.

I bought this from Amazon along with 2-3 other WF Guidebooks on this area and unfortunately, ended up wishing I would have passed this one by. Frankly, there are so many things wrong with this book that I find baffling, especially considering the previous (although limited) positive reviews and that there are much, much better resources available for this area (mainly Kevin Adams' Book & Map).1- Volume: only contains about 60 falls compared to over 600 in Adams' book.2- Content: only contains 1 page of info on each WF and info is very basic... beauty rating, waterflow, directions, etc. Does have a little blurb at the bottom recommending best locations for shooting photos but I didn't find this very valuable as there are no earth-shattering revelations here. Anyone with reasonable sense of adventure could easily find all these angles and more with just a bit of effort.3- Format: this book is about 50% wider than your average guidebook, which would make it more difficult to fit into a day pack or small backpack. The one potential plus is that these are all thick stock glossy full color pages. Unfortunately, this only ends up being a waste of potential as most of the photos look as though they were taking by a weary tourist who could barely be bothered to pull their point and shoot camera out of their day pack (see more on photos below).4- Expertise (or lack thereof): as a self-described photographer and long time western NC resident, one would assume that the author would possess enough knowledge of these falls to be able to shoot them in ideal (or close to it) conditions, especially for inclusion in this book. However, it is now clearly apparent that most of these shots were taking during very low water periods. For a resident of this area, it's baffling why he would do this as it severely detracts from the appearance of most of the falls in this book.5- Photography: OK, with the caveat that the author does actually mention in preface that he intentionally included photos that employ the "stop-action" technique of shooting falls, rather than the "cotton-candy" or blurred effect, he seems to imply that this is just a toss up as far as personal preference goes. OK, yes, in the strictest sense of the term personal preference I suppose he is right, but the fact is that the vast majority of people, photographers & others alike, prefer the blurred effect. I will even admit that in some cases, like extremely high-volume falls, the stop-action version is a decent option to at least try. However, to not include any blurred effect falls in this book is a tremendous oversight and does a tremendous dis-service to the falls of this beautiful area! This is especially apparent in his extremely low-volume shots (again, baffled by this) like Moore Cove Falls & Cove Creek Falls, where the trickle of water coming down would have at least been somewhat more appealing with the blurred effect. To me, this is not so much a preference as it is a cop-out. The fact is, it is much more difficult technically to pull off the blurred effect. First, you absolutely have to shoot on a tripod. It's apparent to me that this author just hand held most or all of these shots. It also appears as though he didn't bother to use a polarizer, something that is a must in many WF shooting situations to cut down on glare, etc. But again, this would make it harder to hand hold a shot. The other thing about blurring water is that you tend to get hot-spots in the higher volume areas and these can effectively ruin your photos. It takes a lot of effort, both pre and post processing to account for this factor. Given all these factors, it seems more like laziness on the part of the author than personal preference but I guess I could be wrong.Just not sure why a publisher would go the extra expense of glossy, heavy, full color stock and then settle for inferior photos to print on it. Bottom line is that if I had purchased only this book and not seen other pics online of some of these falls, I never would have bothered to visit this area at all. And, it's one thing to market this poor attempt to hikers but to actually say it's also for photographers is an insult. I can honestly say that in my 4 short days in this area, I was able to get much better shots of many of the exact same falls in this book, and under less than ideal conditions.

Best book I have found. All the info you need ! Especially the distance you have to walk to eternal and the terrain.

A definite must if you are going to western North Carolina to photograph waterfalls.

I really like how it breaks down by county and shows the falls by dots on the picture of each county. However, there are falls missing from this book. Since I use this book to mark off each falls I have visited I am having to insert my own to the list. One of the dots on the map that shows all counties has the same number listed twice and I had to fix that in the book. Missing waterfalls I have found so far are Catawba Falls and Upper Falls at Graveyard Fields. Then there are falls that are off the beaten path that are so little know that they have to be named something like "Falls on this or that creek". I tried to find 3 of this type of falls and could not, and one of them was even marked as roadside. I would rather see the author put in more known falls and not the unknown falls.

I got this book in advance of a trip to NC to photograph some waterfalls on my own. It has a very good selection of falls to visit and excellent directions on how to get there. The trail directions are ok I would say. I do wish the book was a little smaller to fit, and wheigh less in my backpack on the trails. Excellent product though and the photos will inspire you to get out there.

Great Book! I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the Great Waterfalls of North Carolina! Get it!
