This is an amazing book. I am currently struggling with many things such as stress and anxiety, this book has helped me put many things to rest. If you're looking for amazing insightful advice for personal struggle, this is a great book. The translations and simplification of language help greatly as well, it does not water down the meaning at all. I recommend this to people of all ages, but teens in particular.

Philosophy is one of the most underrated forms of knowledge there is. Stoicism, to be precise, is the type of philosophical thinking that Marcus Aurelius applied to his every day life as an Emperor, and this book is basically his mind on paper. It is a beautiful read, and it's not very difficult either because the translation was modern. If you have not yet read any books on Stoicism, please read The Manual by Epictetus. Most of Marcus' works derive from Epictetus. Thus, it'll be beneficial to understand The Manual before reading The Meditations.

A must-read and a great introduction to stoicism. Accessible and lucid translation of the original work.

I was introduced to Marcus Aurelius by my boyfriend when I expressed interest in Stoicism. Although I have heard many of the concepts or sentiments in the book elsewhere before, it was refreshing to see them from the perspective of an ancient leader. Many of his musings have become invaluable to me and I find myself repeating the messages on a regular basis.So far I've read it twice. I'm grateful for Aurelius's wisdom. The book is written well and is very easy to follow and understand. I recommend it!

Great and simple read. I read it in one day but the principles you can learn in this book are great. I reread some parts every now and then. Stoicism is a wonderful philosophy and this book is a really good condensed version of the overall ethos of stoicism and the great Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius.

I loved reading this book. Thanks to the author for putting these wonderful thoughts into the language that I understand.

I listened to an elderly Dine talk about Dine philosophy to an audience of forty whites with an interest in Southwest Indian culture. I judged he had been instructed by his elders because most of what he had told us I had never heard before. Best of all he presented the material in an orderly way so his talk was mostly comprehendible.I sought him out at lunch and finally got a chance to ask him from whom he got his information, expecting the names of a few shaman or wise elders. He responded that most of what he knew came from a book, The Main Stalk, which he recommended strongly.The work was difficult for me with little knowledge of Dine philosophy, but his talk made my task easier, and I can see how he could comprehend it since the presentation no doubt fits his frame of reference.Thus, I judge the book a reliable source on Dine culture and an excellent introduction to Dine philosophy and religion and mythology and the other categories of Western wisdom. But I gather that these categories have a much better chance of all being squeezed into the same pigeon hole in Dine thought.

The information is solid and the writing is very readable. Farella has a wonderful, in-depth analysis of the Blessingway and its importance to Navajo ceremonies and traditional philosophy that governs current perspective of the world today. The tone is conversational and Farella makes it clear that the book is based on his perceptions. HOwver, from the amount of time that he spend researching, I wold say that his perceptions bear weight.

I am prompted to write a review by the first reviewer's negative comments. This is, indeed, an academic book. It requires attention and thought of the reader but it is well written and not really very difficult to follow. The world view being discussed, however, is complex and not easily grasped by reading any one book. This is an excellent treatment of the subject which invites and expects the serious reader to work a bit for the rich reward it offers.

If you hold a Ph.D. in anthropology or are looking for disertation material for your thesis, or just want to hold your own at academic cocktail parties, take a try at this book. However, it's NOT for the general reader---or even the above-general reader. I have tried several times to slug through the dry text which was obviously written to impress academia and the author himself. Even with a reasonbly high I.Q. and an advanced degree, I had trouble staying interested and understanding the material. There is little doubt this author is an expert in this subject; however, he missed a good opportunity to get the rest of us interested and to impart in a readable and understandable way the obviously vast knowledge which he holds. I'm very impressed at how well the author "showed off," but I would much rather have learned something more about this fascinating subject...which was the purpose of buying the book.

This is a wonderful introduction to the fundamental principles of Navajo philosophy. This is not a "New Age" book and it is not light reading, but it is clearly written. Navajo philosophy is quite complex. Imagine trying to explain the core of Aristotle's work to an audience that is completely ignorant of Western philosophy, and you will begin to appreciate the task that faced the author. The author does a fine job introducing the reader to Navajo philosophy and showing that Navajo assumptions about the universe, and our place in it, are compelling.
