An interesting story about this book: I started it last night on a flight home from Atlanta. The gentleman sitting next to me noticed me reading it and asked if he could look at it. It started an interesting discussion. The gentleman behind me actually was reading it over my shoulder and several times during the flight he tapped me on the shoulder and had a comment. I ended up giving him the book and ordering another copy.....

As all the commentaries in this series, this commentary is written in a clear, concise and understandable manner. I would recommend this to any individual or Bible Study Group. However, there is one characteristic, that detracts from this commentary ,(and others in the series) and that is the running commentary on the New American Bible edition. The commentator constantly comments on how the RSV or NIV says it differently (read that as better) than the NAB. I agree that the NAB may not be as "perfect" as the others; but saying that over and over is just plain annoying and detracts from the flow of the "story.". If the NAB is so bad why didn't the editors use the RSV which is perfectly acceptable, for study, in the Catholic community. Today, I was side tracked by the comments regarding Acts 9:5, with such translation issues as sir vs. Lord, or sir vs lord,, or in Spanish senor vs Senor, or in Greek kurie vs kurie. Instead, I could have been drawn to a view of in addition to Saul's physical blindness, his lack of knowledge of the Lord (at this point lord, or sir might be better) is his spiritual blindness. Thus, although something powerful has happened, Saul cannot see Jesus just as the disciples on the road to Emmaus could not see Jesus until they understood.

Even though I spent 8 years in Catholic elementary school, 4 years at a Catholic high school, and 4 years at a Catholic college I never really learned the things that this book says about the Acts of the Apostles. The text is an easy read and it is very enlightening about a book of the bible that is rarely examined in adult life.

I was introduced to this Catholic Commentary by a visiting Priest to our church who suggested it during a special Bible Study during Lent 2016. It is very useful while doing Bible Study either on your own or as a group.

This arrived and two days later a college seminarian needed a commentary on Acts of the Apostles. I knew he would understand it and that it would have good information.

This is a great book which tells the story of the Birth of Christianity. Thorough commentaries with references to the Old Testament, New testament and the Catechism. It is the best book on the Acts of the Apostles that I have read.

Wonderful asset to go along with the study course.

My second cousin was a stewardess during the era that this book features. I gave this to her as an 80th birthday gift and she got a big kick out of it! As she flipped through the pages, it elicited memories that she shared with us. She also dug her own stewardess photo and certificate. I know she'll enjoy reading it and looking through it many times over. This gets five stars for content, though the book itself was slightly worn because it was used.

If you have a desire to work in the sky, don't fall for this book. It has no content to give you any idea of what the job is like...I know, I flew for 16 1/2 years for TWA. Save your money!TR

The photo's were great but I found the text lacking in detail and insider information, which is what you expect from this time of book. It would make a great gift for anyone into fashion, design, or airlines.....and of course a sky tart or wagon witch!

"Stewardess-Come Fly With Me" is an outstanding pictorial account of a long gone era where there was glamour in the skies. Current and future female flight attendants should be required to peruse it.

This is a must read for anybody who has worked in the airline industry. My sister was a PSA Sterwardess and is pictured in this book. Really fun to look at.

Neat book if you were a "Stewardess" before they became "Flight Attendants" Also did not know until I bought the book that I am on the back cover.

Chronicle Books has produced many exciting, well-researched, expertly written and graphically enticing books exploring seemingly every facet of American popular culture. It's also served up some slapdash, cut-and-paste jobs that needed a little more editorial effort. This stewardess tome definitely falls in the latter category. It's a scrapbook mess of a book and a big disappointment. Even the short introduction, though fairly informative and well-written, doesn't let us know exactly when the "golden age" of flight occurred. 1950s? 1960s? Going by the book's cover and the retro title, I anticipated a narrowly focused book on the era of the swinging stewardess, roughly 15 years from 1960 to 1975. This was the golden age of flight and the golden age of the stewardess. Airlines then only hired young, female, unmarried, childless, great-looking stews and outfitted them in uniforms ranging from smart Pucci designs (Braniff) to street-corner hooker getups (Pacific Southwest Airlines). Popular culture in those years was wild about the stewardess. The sexy stew was the ultimate object of desire. Books, movies, magazines, TV shows, postcards, board games, cocktail glasses, boarding passes, you-name-it, fired up the male libido (and cash registers) with provocative images and tall tales. No bachelor's little black book was complete with the name of at least one Rachel or Trudi or Bambi who flew the friendly skies. There was an entire publishing boom around Donald Bain's ghost-written "Coffee, Tea or Me" paperbacks. Drive-in movies were replete with gorgeous stews doing very adult things. This book does touch on some material of this crazy era--advertisements, grainy snapshots, brochures--but it's pretty scant and mixed together with other stewardess ephemera from dowdier times. The entire book is non-annotated, so you don't know exactly what you're looking at or why. For example, facing pages will show a stewardess class from the 1980s and a class from the 1950s without a single caption or even letting you know what airline. Even the credit page in the back is not useful; it credits the cover from USAirways without letting you know it's actually two PSA stewardesses from the early '70s before the USAirways merger. A much better book came out a few years ago called "Come Fly With Us." Though apparently out-of-print, it's worth tracking down if you're really interested in flight attendant history. The big pop-culture book about the much-loved sexy stewardess, though, is still to be written.
