As others have said, this is a gripping and lucid personal narrative, written with absolute authenticity. I have read enough about this cult toobserve the similarities, as insiders and former insiders tell their stories, point to clear and true telling of the insidious practices of thisfake church. The author is a very good writer, able to clearly articulate, in a way that could challenge the best of us, a whole spectrum of feelings, scenarios, and memoirs from her more than 25 year history among Scientologists, at both high and low levels of the little scientology universe. The book is also one of the most amazingly even handed relevations of insider experience with a damaging cult- there is no axe to grind, just a process-oriented story and personal history to relate. The old time religions would often say that " satan comes in many tempting guises " - and yes, they may just be quite right when it comesto the sum total of Scientology. For all the "potential" the author wishes to explore, hold on to, and even continue believing in, the goodnessjust isn't there when it comes to Scientology itself, although it may be there among the original inner intentions of those innocent seekerswho so very quickly and ruthlessly are caught up it it's web. I think in the end she was coming to see it was such intentions to align with, and not the cult( and its machinations) itself.

If you are interested in learning what really goes on in the Scientology religion, this is a "must read." I found the psychology of it fascinating. I always used to say "what kind of an idiot would get involved in a group like this?" But now I see that sometimes, people are missing something. They are searching for meaning in their life. The author, Nancy Many, had wonderful intentions of helping to make the world a better place, but instead, she endured mental and really physical abuse. This "church" uses people for their money, lures them in with promises of becoming a better, whole person and then subsequently breaks them down, leaving them broken and penniless. Hopefully, people thinking about joining this cult will read this book and think again. Really a good read. :)

While I am more sympathetic than some with Scientology, and not always inclined to buy into hatchet jobs aimed at this and other religious organizations that one often finds in the publishing industry, Nancy Many's story is credible, and it rings true from the first page to the last. It is a forceful and revealing statement of a woman who descended into a hell of contrived hazing and atrocity within this "applied religious philosophy" after rising to its high echelons. Many offers a vivid portrayal of an organization, sick from top to bottom, that bears at once the impress of its originator's genius and his psychotic hatred.

Went into this read knowing almost nothing about Scientology and the story completely took me away. I have a pretty adventurous life being in the Navy. I read this book on deployment during my free time and it was the perfect escape from my hectic day. I gave it to a friend that was on deployment with me and they also enjoyed the read. I wasn’t trying to necessary get the inside scoop on Scientology but rather looking for a story that would keep me engaged and this book was it.

Interesting book, however Ms Many expresses herself in a very kind fashion, while she was treated like a criminal--a pregnant criminal, and I believe the book would have been far more interesting had she expressed herself in a more human way. Scientology is a vicious cult and should be noted as such.

The answer to that questions is found in this book! Although the book is an excellent read and a horrific look at humans being held hostage and treated worse than prisoners, the saddest part is that they are mostly prisoners to their own brainwashing and that is why they will be held in 100+ degree heat in Florida in a parking garage while pregnant. It is really hard for a normal person to understand why they allow this to happen to themselves, but is a little easier to understand after reading the book because you see how slowly the brainwashing builds and the person's critical thinking skills are destroyed. I don't believe this author is 100% free of all the brainwashing yet (at the time of writing this book), but hopefully is on the road to complete recovery. Very horrible that once free she even went back and spied on other X- Scientologists! It show the enormous hold this cult has on everyone who gets caught up in it!

I wasn't especially in love with the end of this book when she tapers off into her "non-scientology life" but this book is definitely worth the purchase if you want a glimpse into Scientology behind the scenes (the people who work for Sea Org). I am writing this review because I am convinced (after reading the book you will be too) that Scientologists are probably writing up fake lousy reviews for it because they don't want it read :). As a non-scientologists I can say it's good, not great, but an interesting read.

I have read 'Blown For Good' & 'Abuse at the Top' and a few other popular books about people leaving Scientology. Of the three or four books I found this one to be the hardest to read. This book is about a lot more than just her experience leaving the Church. I got the Kindle edition, and as I was reading the first chapter I thought that I must be reading the wrong book, because it didn't seem to have anything to do with Scientology, it wasn't until much later in the book that I finally understood what was happening in the first chapter. She is very detailed in her writing but its not as quick of a read as some of the other big ex-Scientology books out there. The book is formatted oddly. Some bits of the book seem random, and somewhere in the middle the book seems to end and it just becomes a bunch of journal entries. I would like it if the book was more structured, it feels almost like a stream of consciousness style of writing. That said I enjoyed it overall very much, but it was not a page-turner like Blown for good and Abuse at the Top.
