Barbara Brundage has been the author of Photoshop Elements: The Missing Manual since Elements 3, is an Adobe Community Expert, and has been a member of Adobe's prerelease groups since Elements 3. She's been teaching people how to use Photoshop Elements since it first came out in 2001. Barbara, who lives in Jensen Beach, Florida, started using Elements to create graphics for use in her day job as a harpist, music publisher, and arranger. I have purchased several of the Missing Manual books in the past as the Elements program has been upgraded and improved. In the past I have always read and used this the book as a reference to find out "how-to-do" ideas with which I was not familiar. When Photoshop Elements 13 was released, I really excited about the many changes that had been made in the program that I had not spent much time with even in version 12. I bought the Elements 13 Missing Manual knowing that it would be a good "reference" book. In the meantime, I had also decided to take a more serious attitude with my photography and get down to business. When I purchased the Missing Manual for Elements 13, I approached the book knowing that there would be good information even though I had not spent much time with the program itself. When I began reviewing the book to find out what was in the program, I really became excited because the Table of Contents and the Index are the first parts I look for in any technical book. These two parts of the book were listing all of the functions I had ever wanted in a photo editor. I had tried to learn Photoshop (the BIG Brother) but was not successful because of its complexity, needed by the professionals. This edition of the Missing Manual "blew my mind". The details and explanations are truly the kind of information anyone who is more serious about photo editing will truly value, like getting an instructor without paying for the actual class. It is truly a GREAT value for anyone who needs down-to-earth detailed information. Plus, the book also offers added files and information on its web pages.
I gave this five stars, and in my opinion it is very deserving of those stars. I can only think that the people who said it was too difficult tried to do things that were beyond what they should have tried. I started at the beginning and have worked my way through it, increasing my skills as I went. I sometimes try to jump ahead and invariably get into trouble. But I go back to my place and work my way forward and all is good. The only suggestion I would have for Ms. Brundage, and it is not enough to take a star away, is that she give a FAR more detailed index. Lots of things that I want to try, and that she explains in the book, are not listed anywhere in the index. That means that I can't jump ahead and try them, but it also means that I can't find them when I need to go back to something and re-read what she said about it. Otherwise, absolutely outstanding instruction...with just a hint of humor.
O'Reilly's "Missing Manual" series claims each of its titles is "The book that should have been in the box". While I can't address the entire series, I have purchased and used several of them, including the missing manuals for four different versions of Photoshop Elements (PSE).PSE 13 is generally similar at the user interface level to versions going back to PSE 8, and it remains --like its predecessor versions-- extremely feature dense. This makes it both a powerful digital image editor, and a potential deep well of frustration for users. While PSE 13 includes some enhanced automated and guided image editing functions, users hoping to harness its full power will achieve this sooner if they grab some help. Barbara Brundage offers this assistance in a detailed guide that explores the higher functions of PSE, while respecting the challenges many readers may have in grasping complex technology.Brundage offers both conceptual overviews and tutorials of PSE 13's interface, functions and changes since PSE 12. She effectively breaks down the the concepts of file management, basic editing, image manipulation and sharing of the results of these digital editing techniques.This book is particularly effective in addressing the two areas that can lead to delight --or despair-- among would-be photo editors: selection and layering in PSE.The conceptual discussions and tutorials in this book are intelligently discussed and laid out in good detail. The companion materials to this book are online ("the missing CD"), and include links to sample images used for demonstrations in the book, and to other online resources to assist with PSE mastery. The author and creative team both have links to their own websites and email addresses listed in the introduction. You will also see that I have responded directly to other reviewers' comments. This indicates strong ownership and a high level of accessibility. In addition, the author readily --and correctly-- points out that many high quality step-by-step guides to most things you might want to do are readily found on popular video sites.Two things to note before diving into this book and your PSE 13 experience:(1) The book's table of contents lists three appendices at the rear of the book. However, only one is printed with the book ("Installation and Troubleshooting"). The other two appendices recap of all the menu entries for the PSE Organizer and PSE Editor) are online content (the too-cute "missing CD" materials). I found the detail on the current installation of downloaded versions of PSE 13 to be light on details that might give less technically inclined Windows users the confidence to understand the paired of executable and compressed files they will have to manage for the installation process; this is perhaps the book's biggest weakness. Finally, sometimes the book gushes just a bit about the overall capabilities of PSE ("while it's doing wonderful things to your picture..."). These are minor points, and in no way diminish from the overall usefulness of this must have reference for users of PSE 13.
