Review

In Without a Map Lisa Steele-Maley invites us to pause, embrace our loved ones, and embrace the good that is in each moment as we come to accept the unknown together. Steele-Maley offers solidarity and hope, along with many examples of practical problem-solving, to anyone who is in a position to care for an aging parent or loved one. Her own walk with her father through the profoundly destabilizing experience of his illness and passing is recounted honestly, but Steele-Maley reminds us that caregiving can open us up to awe and reverence for the wonder that each lifetime really is. - Elizabeth Gibbons Capdevielle, Ph.D. University Writing Program, University of Notre Dame Without a Map is an insightful and valuable description of what it's like to be the long-term caregiver for someone with dementia. Told with candor and wit, it's moving, enlightening, and a gripping account. I would highly recommend it for anyone caring for a loved one with dementia. - Barak Gaster MD, Professor of Medicine, University of Washington As a reader, you get a true sense of Steele-Maley's evolution as she cares for her father through his dementia. Towards the book's conclusion, each line written is moresignificant than the next. In the end, the author's wilderness journey grants all of us with apanoramic view of life that honors the journey and not the destination. - Kimberly Luyckx, Reader Views In this courageous and important memoir, Lisa Steele-Maley guides us into the art of gentle companioning. This is a beautifully written book that takes you on the author’s journey with her father’s dementia. She begins the journey somewhat reluctantly but becomes stronger and more sure of the path as his disease progresses. As an outdoor adventurer herself she is able to weave her experiences on the trail with his care in such a way that you feel yourself accompanying her every step of the way. I will be the first in line to buy her next book!

I am so grateful that a friend recommended this book to me. I am buying three more to give out to others. I was reading this book as I travelled, and found myself completely swept away by the story line - I lost track of myself and my surroundings in the airport. This is rare praise for nonfiction. I wept through much of the book, but my tears were often in response to the incredible beauty of the book. My mother also struggles with dementia, and I found great solace in the author’s honesty and integrity as she navigated her way through her relationship with her father. I found peace in this book, and I will reread it many times.

Lisa's memoir is a generous, honest, hopeful, and helpful glimpse into navigating the tough terrain of care-giving. It is also a powerful expression of how the craft of care is truly a mutual affair; in which a patient and adaptable approach to meeting the needs of those in our lives who are most vulnerable can (and often does) become the most profound source of personal formation. If you have ever been cared for, have ever cared for anyone, or intend to give or receive care at some future point in your life: Read and ponder this beautiful book!

Lisa has created an extremely moving and relatable account of her experiences with her father in his dementia and dying processes. Her book is easily readable in a sitting, and I would have been unable to put it down once I started in any case. I now want everyone I know who works in the caring professions, has elders in their lives, knows anyone contending with dementia or their caregivers, and everyone who appreciates the value of heart-felt connection, to read and reread and absorb the love and lessons on offer. In Lisa’s reflections I recognize my own as well as universal experiences of grief, of wandering into unknown territory of the mind and heart, and the power of genuine and loving presence to transform how we perceive and engage in our lives and relationships. It helped me recognize my regrets in not engaging in more heart-opening ways in the end of life journeys of loved ones in the past and finding inspiration for how to more fully engage going forward.

I read this book like one would sip a cool glass over water over an afternoon. The book is manageable and bestows the reader with many lessons on many levels. There are specific lessons of caregiving an elder with dementia; there are metaphorical lessons of wilderness and environmental philosophy; there are broad-stroke lessons of humility, human forgiveness, family joy and sorrow; and there are lessons of mysteries that we brush up against and leave us changed. I hope others pick up this book and drink from its wise words. If enough of us do that, the world will be a more compassionate, more loving, and more humane place to be.

Without a Map offers a thoughtful sanctuary of information and counsel for the reader who takes time to listen to this writer's well expressed experiences of coping with a victim of Alzheimer's disease. Lisa Steele-Maley's thematic metaphor of building paths in the Alaskan wilderness offers a useful anecdotal pathway through the unexpected thicket of emotions, burden and pain when a loved, respected and independent parent becomes a bewildered dependent. On one page she writes, "...writing also gave me a chance to digest the experiences I shared with Dad." Her insights serve her readers.

Lisa's story reminds us that just as our parents loved and guided us as we transitioned from newborn to adult, so too can we love and guide our parents as they complete their journey.
